Instrument panel
Instrument panel, removing and installing

Removing

Note:

„ To remove the instrument panel both front doors


must be open. Therefore take care to have an
adequately roomy work area for the vehicle.

- If rear of vehicle is equipped with 10-way seats, adjust


the seats into position necessary for removal 72-2, Rear
seat cushions, 10-position seat, removing and installing .

- Turn the steering wheel to center position (front wheels


point straight ahead).

- Pull out the ignition key and allow the steering wheel lock
to engage.

- Remove front headrests 72-1, Seat headrest,


removing and installing .

- Remove front seats 72-1, Front seat, removing and


installing .

- Remove footwell cover (driver side) 68-2, Footwell


cover (driver side), removing and installing .

4-seater

- Remove display and information control unit, rear

- Remove rear seat cushions, 10-way seat 72-2, Rear


seat cushions, 10-position seat, removing and installing .

- Remove two bolts - 1 - and - 2 - from


fuse holder.

- Remove the two bolts - 1 - .

- Remove locking bolt - 2 - and pull off


lower steering column - 3 - from steering
pinion - 4 - .

Note :

„ The lower steering column is attached to the


steering column. Therefore it must be secured with
cable ties to prevent it from falling down.

- Remove bolt - 1 - in driver footwell. It is


located on the right next to the steering
column.

- Remove the two bolts on the right and


left - 2 - .

- Remove the two bolts on the right and


left - 3 - .

- With the help of a second technician,


pull the instrument panel out of the three
front mounts - 1 - and the A-pillar
brackets - 2 - .

- Hold the instrument panel in the area of


the outer vents.

- Have a third technician, working from


the footwell, disconnect all wiring
harnesses to the instrument panel.

- Disconnect all wiring harnesses in the


upper area of the instrument panel.

- Remove the instrument panel from the


vehicle.

Note :

„ There are two spacers between the instrument panel


and the A-pillar on each side of the vehicle.

- Adjust the spacers - 3 - to their


minimal width.

- Insert the four spacers - 3 - into the


instrument panel mountings.

- Lift the instrument panel into the vehicle


with the help of a second technician.
Hold the instrument panel in the area of
the outer vents.

- Have a third technician, working from


the footwell, connect all wiring harnesses
to the instrument panel.

- Connect all wiring harnesses in the


upper area of the instrument panel.

- Now place the instrument panel in the


three front mountings - 1 - and onto the
A-pillar bracket - 2 - .

- Hand tighten the two bolts - 3 - on the


left and right.

- Hand tighten the two bolts - 2 - on the


left and right.

- Hand tighten the bolt - 1 - .

- After the instrument panel is aligned in


the vehicle, tighten the bolt - 1 - to 20
Nm.

- Hand tighten the two bolts - 1 - .

- After the instrument panel is aligned in


the vehicle, tighten the bolts - 1 - to 20
Nm.

- Place the lower steering column - 3 -


all the way onto the steering pinion - 4 -
until the limit stop.

- Fasten the lower steering column and


the steering gear together using the bolt -
2 - . The torque is 30 Nm.

- Secure the fuse holder with two sets of


bolts - 1 - and - 2 - (3.5 Nm).

Height alignment of instrument panel (Z-axis)

- The height of the instrument panel is to


be aligned with the lower edges of the
instrument panel trim - A - and the door
trim panels - B - .

- If necessary, remove the bolts - 1 -


and - 2 - and insert a corresponding
spacer - 3 - (1, 2 or 3 mm) between the
instrument panel - 4 - and A-pillar
bracket - 5 - .

- Tighten the bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and


check the adjusted instrument panel
height.

- If necessary, correct the adjusted


height as described.

- After the correct instrument panel


height has been determined, remove
bolts - 1 - and - 2 - .

- Following the same procedure, adjust

the instrument panel to the correct height


on the left side of the vehicle.

- After the instrument panel depth and


lateral position have been adjusted,
tighten the bolts - 1 - and - 2 - to 40
Nm.

Depth alignment of instrument panel (X-axis)

- The depth of the instrument panel is to


aligned so that it contacts the A-pillar trim
- 2- .

- Remove two bolts - 3 - .

- With a mounting lever positioned


behind the A-pillar bracket - 4 - , press
the instrument panel - 1 - forward until it
contacts the A-pillar trim.

- Following the same procedure, align

the instrument panel on the left side of


the vehicle.

Lateral alignment of instrument panel (Y-axis)

- The lateral position of the instrument


panel is to be aligned so that the right
and left side have the same width gap -
a - to the door panel trim.

Note :

„ For a better overview, the instrument panel is shown


uninstalled.

- Tighten two bolts - 1 - on the left and


right side of vehicle. The torque is 20
Nm.

Note :

„ The four spacers - 2 - close any possible gap


between the instrument panel and the A-pillar.

- Tighten the instrument panel bolts mentioned in the


preceding steps to the specified torques.

Note:

„ The installation of the instrument panel is complete.


Installation of the remaining components is
performed in reverse order of removal.
