CONCEPT OF FLUIDS AND ELECTROLYTES

DEFINITION OF TERMS

HOMEOSTASIS
It is the existence and maintenance of relatively constant environment within the body despite
fluctuations in either the external environment or the internal environment(Vanputte et al,.1989).
Body constantly strives to maintain a state of balance or equilibrium(Brunner & Suddarth,2013).

WATER
From its chemical formula H2O which is a combination of the elements Hydrogen and Oxygen.
Water makes up more than two-thirds of the weight of the human body. Without consuming
water, humans would die in a few days(Water in diet,2022).

FLUIDS
Fluids make up a large portion of the body, which is approximately 50%-60% of the total body
weight (Belleza M,2021).
Fluids are components found inside a body of an organism which differs in composition to meet
their functions(Nathaniel P,2014).

SOLUTES
This are substances dissolved in a predominant liquid or gas(Vanputte et al.,1989).

SOLVENT
Liquid that holds another substance in solution (Vanputte et al.,1989).

SOLUTION
Homogenous mixture formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent (Vanputte et al.,1989).

BODY FLUID LOSS

It is associated with dehydration wherein the body does not have enough water and other fluids
to carry its normal function(Dehydrarion.Mayo Clinic.,2022).
TONICITY
It is the capability of a solution to modify the volume of cells by altering their water content. The
movement of water into a cell can lead to hypotonicity or hypertonicity when water moves out of
the cell(Maldonado & Mohiuddin, 2021)

FLUID DYNAMICS
It is the study of the movement of fluids, including their interactions as two fluids into contact
with each other(Jones A,2019)

ACTIVE TRANSPORT/ PASSIVE TRANSPORT

According to Brunner & Suddarth (1989) Active transport is a carrier-mediated process that
requires ATP and can move substances into or out of cells from a lower to a higher concentration
while on the other hand Passive Transport is a carrier-mediated process that does not require
energy that moves solutes from an area of higher concentration resulting in an equal distribution
of solutes between the two areas.
