Electricity

• A battery or cell contains chemicals which produce

an electrical current when connected to a circuit
• A Conductor is a material that allows electricity to
flow through it easily (copper, Iron …)
• Insulator: IS a material that does not allow the
electricity to flow through it (wood, plastic...)

Remember:

• We use batteries to investigate electricity, because the

electricity from the sockets at school or at your home is
dangerous. It is safer to use a battery
• When the bulb lights up, then electricity must be moving
through the material from the battery to the bulb

Now we know what is a conductor and what is an insulator:

Plastic
Let’s think of this:

Why all the electric wires are covered

with plastic?

Copper
Now as you know we use batteries in our investigations (it is
safer)
Name three things that will need batteries to work:

In your home we use electricity that flows from power station
through cables (Mains electricity)
Name three things that will need plug into the mains electricity to
work:

Electricity flows through a circuit when everything is joined up
correctly.
We call this electricity the current.
The current flows from the power source, which produces the
electricity, through conductors back to the power source.
This is why it is called a circuit, like a running track.
