ENHANCING THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE

AND DELAYING THE FREEZING TIME OF

RADIATOR USING PCM
ABSTRACT
An automobile radiator is a component of an automotive cooling
system which plays a major role in transferring the heat from the engine
parts to the environment through its complex system and working. It is a
type of cross flow heat exchanger which is designed to transfer the hot
coolant coming from the engine to the air blown through it by the fan. A
small segment of the radiator is analysed for the with and without
conditions of Phase Change Material. The thermal analysis will be done
for the created closed environment radiator setup. The heat transfer
processes takes place from the coolants to the tubes then from the tubes
to the PCM. After the process is carried out, the absorbed heat is stored
in PCM and utilized for the prevention of freezing.
WORKING PRINCIPLES
Radiators work to eliminate heat from the engine. The process
begins when the thermostat in the front of the engine detects excess heat.
Then the coolant get released from the radiator and sent through the
engine to absorb this heat. In water cooled systems a liquid, usually
water, is pumped through pipes. The liquid takes the heat from the
components and dissipates it in a radiator. It operates on the same
principle as the engine cooling system in a car where coolant is pumped
through the engine and to the radiator.
