Example: The principal balance (the amount borrowed) is £1000. This is to be
repaid over 5 years at a 10% rate of interest
Amount to repay = principal amount x (1 + interest rate)years
Amount to repay = £1000 x (1 + 0.1)5
Amount to repay = £1,610.51
Always round money to 2
d.p.

1. David invests $700 for 4 years at a 10% interest rate, which is

compounded once every year. Calculate the total amount.

$1024.87

2. Brian invests $8000 for 8 years at a rate of 4.5% per annum. How

much interest does he earn? $3376.80

3. Lucy invests $10,000 for 3 years at a rate of 5.6%. How much money is

in her bank at the end of the 3 years?

$11,775.84

Quadratic equations
To solve a quadratic
equation, we put it in standard form:

Examples using factorising:

x2 = 9x - 18 m2 = 3m + 10

x2 - 9x + 18 = 0 m2 - 3m - 10 = 0

(x - 6)(x - 3) = 0 (m + 2)(m - 5) = 0

x-6=0 x-3=0 m+2=0 m-5=0

x=6 x=3 m = -2 m=5

1. Solve by factorising: x2 - 13x = 30

(x + 2)(x - 15)

2. Solve by factorising: x2 + 7 x = -10

(x + 2)(x + 5)

3. Solve by factorising: 4x2 - 2x = 2

(2x - 2)(2x + 1)

Algebraic Substitution - Simultaneous Equations

Steps for solving simultaneous equations with substitution

1. Choose the equation you want to work with first.
2. Isolate the x variable in the first equation.
3. Plug in the value of x into the second equation.
1. Solve the simultaneous equations below:

5x + 3y = 41
2x + 3y = 20
x = 7 and y = 2

2. Solve the simultaneous equations below:

5x + y = 11
3x - y = 9

x = 2.5 and y = -1.5

3. 1000 tickets were sold.  An adult ticket costs $8.50, a child ticket costs

$4.50. The total was $7300. How many tickets of each kind were sold?

x = 700 and y = 300

Index Notation
1. Simplify.

Prime factors, LCM HCF
Lowest Common Multiple: The lowest number in two or more numbers’

times tables.

Highest Common Factor (HCF): The largest number that goes into two or

more numbers exactly.

Prime factors: We can use a ‘factor tree’ to write a number as “a product

of its prime factors”

1. Find the HCF and LCM of 24 and 60. Draw factor trees for both.

24 60

HCF = 12 and LCM = 120

2. Find the HCF and LCM of 420 and 132. Draw factor trees for both.

420 132

HCF = 12 and LCM = 4620

Rounding - Significant Figures and Decimal Places

1. Count all non-zero digits (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)

2. Count any zero between 2 significant digits

3. Don’t count leading or trailing zeros when rounding to a certain

number s.f or d.p

Complete the tables below by rounding the numbers:

Standard Form
Standard form is a way of writing down very large or small numbers.
Large numbers written in standard form have a positive index. However,

for small numbers, it will be negative. The rules when writing a number

in standard form is that first you write down a number between 1 and

10, then you write × 10 (to the power of a number).

0.63 0.0056
120,000 99,000
0.000000056 100,000
31,000 0.0000000019

6.8 x 107 2.3 x 10-7

1.3 x 104 6.7 x 101
4.4 x 10-12 1.2 x 103
4.0 x 102 9.9 x 1011

Ratio & Proportion

1. 70 people are divided into two groups for a medical experiment. 21 people

3:7
receive the real drug and the rest receive a placebo. What is the ratio of
people taking the real drug to those receiving the placebo?

2. A car factory produces red and blue cars in the ratio 3:5. If it produces
150 red cars each week, how many blue cars does it make?

250 blue cars

3. A farmer produces apples and pears in the ratio 7:6. If she harvests 42
tonnes of apples, how many tonnes of pears does she produce?

36 tonnes of pears

4. Turquoise paint is made from blue, white and green in the ratio 2:4:1. If
you have 4 litres of blue paint and can buy as much green and white as you
need, how many litres of turquoise paint can you make in total?

14 litres of turquoise paint

5. A man knits baby clothes for his local baby care unit. He makes tops and
hats in the ratio 3:2. If he makes 10 more tops than hats, how many hats
does he make?

20 hats

6. A gardener plants roses in the ratio 5 yellow to every 3 red. He plants 20

more yellow than red roses bushes. How many red rose bushes does he
plant?

30 red rose bushes
