LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Jessica Seo

Salvete omnes, I'm Jessica and I'm one of the Nuntius editors
this year. There were many great NJ-JCL events this winter
and spring and this edition is covering all the fun from the
events. I hope you enjoy it! I'm glad I could work as one of
the Nunitus editors this year and I had a lot of fun making
the Nuntius.

Shawn Smith

Salvete omnes! I am Shawn Smith, the other Nuntius editor

for this year. We hope you enjoyed the previous edition of the
Nuntius and that you were able to learn about current
officers and the exciting events we held year. As difficult as
it may be to believe, this school year is quickly coming to a
close and the candidates for next year's officer position
have already been announced. You can learn more about them
in here, as well as other NJJCL events and a preview of state
convention late in May! We hope you enjoy this newsletter as
much as the previous one!

FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL

Salve,
I am Kelson Lowrie, and I am from Franklin High School,
in Franklin Twp, NJ. Our JCL chapter is called FHS JCL,
and we have about 40 members. We have had many
meetings throughout the year, ranging from painting
mythological pumpkins for Halloween, to Certamen
practice. The best activity we did this year was a Roman
Murder mystery where we all dressed up and did a
murder mystery as a club. We plan to prepare for March
certamen at future meetings! We also plan to host the
state convention this year as an activity. I feel FHS JCL
is unique because of the activities we host throughout
the year. FHS JCL is hosting the state convention this
year, so everyone who attends can see how great our
school is!

WINTER CERTAMEN 2022

By Kaelyn Johnson, Camile Leduc, and Anika Pophali
Ridge High School

Certamen is always fun as it's a chance to meet people

from other schools who share the same passion for Latin as
we do. While we missed competing with my friends, Certamen
being open this year gave us the ability to be on teams with
students from different schools which provided another way
of being able to connect with other Latin students. Competing
with people from other schools was great because we all
balanced each other out. My teammates learned some
different things than I did and I knew some things that they
did not, so all of us were able to bring different perspectives
to the competition and be successful. It was also fun to
compete against my friends for the first time and try to win
bragging rights. Being involved with Certamen is also a great
experience because it allowed me to examine my Latin
knowledge on a wider scale and compare my knowledge to
those not in my school, while making a few friendly
acquaintances along the way.

WINTER CERTAMEN 2022

Additionally, Certamen is especially exciting for me

because of the challenge it provides. It feels amazing to be
able to utilize the lessons you’ve learned in class for years.
Certamen was a great reminder of past lessons which helped
bring my attention to areas where I was lacking. Also, it made
me realize just how much I’ve grown as a Latin student. Even
though Certamen questions were challenging, they weren’t
impossible, and I was consistently able to at least make a good
guess at what the answer might be. Certamen questions also
pointed me in the direction of new things I might be interested
in. Some of the questions referenced interesting mythology
which I researched after the game ended. Overall, I would
recommend Certamen to anyone interested in learning about
Latin beyond what is taught in class.

WINTER CERTAMEN 2022

Not only was Certamen an exciting experience due to all

the new people we got to meet and the challenge to use our
Latin skills to the fullest, but also opened my eyes to all the
knowledge that we have yet to learn. Being in the same level as
upperclassmen for Certamen and seeing how many questions
they could answer that I was stumped on showed me what we
are still yet to learn and how much we will grow in just a few
years. It was really interesting to hear about new myths and
all the other grammatical components of Latin I haven’t heard
of yet. Though it’s a little daunting to think about all the things
we’re going to study, but exciting to think that in a couple
years we’ll be able to answer all the questions we were
incapable of answering before. Overall, Certamen is a great
opportunity to meet new people, put your knowledge to the
test, and see all the interesting stories and language related
content (such as Ancient Roman history) details you are going
to learn later on.

SHELTER COMMUNITY
SERVICE EVENT
By Chloe Jones, Proconsul

As one of the NJ-JCL’s fall community service events,

I hosted a Zoom where participants made homemade dog
and cat toys, and then donated them to their local
shelters. We used scraps of fabrics and duct tape to make
easy DIY toys for the animals, and it was fun to be able to
show our creativity through such a simple toy. There was
a lot of excitement in the chat during the Zoom and I was
so pleased to hear back about how excited the shelters
were about our donations. I had a lot of fun at the event
and am so glad it went smoothly! Hopefully we can do a
similar event again or spread it to high school chapters
because it was easy, fun, and made a big difference to the
animals in need.

BAKING EVENTS

By Nicholas Maharaj, Recording Scriba

Just as cookies rise in the oven, the NJ-JCL's baking

event rose to the occasion! In January, Latin students
from across the state of New Jersey bonded through a
virtual baking event. Teachers and students baked cookies
through Zoom, while having an amicable conversation. It
was so deliciously sweet to bond through a shared love--
cookies--while also strengthening Latin unity throughout
the state. The NJ-JCL really mixed it up with this event!

KENYA AND OPERATION

YELLOW RIBBON
By Chloe Jones, Proconsul

One of the teachers at Clearview Regional High School

annually runs a fundraiser for an orphanage in Kenya. She
asked me to help make it a statewide event and we
worked hard to raise money so the children could have
books and uniforms, and hopefully build another room
onto the orphanage.
As an alternative option, since some schools were
limited in their ability to give money, so we had a
collection of supplies for deployed soldiers. Most of the
recipients were from New Jersey and they were given
various cookies and other snacks.

SPRING CERTAMEN 2022

By Shawn Smith, Nuntius Editor

The 2022 NJ-JCL certamen event was, once again,

held in a virtual setting. While we all hoped to be able to
hold the event in person, the event still drew a massive
crowd and no shortage of excitement. I noticed around
150 people in the Zoom meeting from different Latin
levels and schools. Our meeting room contained teams
from three different schools as we all attempted to
answer challenging and insightful questions on Latin
grammar, vocab and Roman history. The virtual setting
still provided a great environment for the officers to
connect with other NJ-JCL members. The Certamen
Coordinators began by introducing themselves and
presenting a slide show with important information in an
interactive format. The officers were able to meet the
other NJ-JCL members during Certamen and interact with
them to create memories. I look forward to go back to
Princeton for next year's Certamen event to be able to
meet people in person!

APRIL COOKING NIGHT

By Vincent Fox, Corresponding Scriba

Wouldn’t it feel great to cook just like the Ancient Romans once did? At
the NJ-JCL Cooking Night, we did exactly that! On April 1st the NJ-JCL
Registrars held a statewide virtual event to teach everyone how to cook
Roman food. Everyone split up into two breakout rooms focused on either
cooking Calcio Pepe-Roman Pasta or baking a Roman Cake. Despite being
someone who rarely bakes, I was thrilled to be up for the challenge of
attempting to bake a cake that would have been suitable for the Romans. My
Roman cake consisted of a homemade dough with a ricotta cheese and
blueberry jelly filling. Its decadent flavor is something I could almost
imagine being cooked in an Ancient Roman kitchen. With help from the
Registrars, my cooking skills were certainly increased! I highly encourage all
to participate in future cooking events. All in all, the night was an
astonishing success thanks to the NJ-JCL Registrars. I’m excited about
future cooking events, whether they be virtual or in-person!
