Sandeep Kumar Gupta to be next

chairman of GAIL, succeeds Manoj Jain


Sandeep Kumar Gupta, Director for Finance at Indian Oil
Corporation, has been picked to head India's largest gas utility
GAIL (India) Ltd, the government headhunter said. He will replace
Manoj Jain, who is scheduled to retire on August 31.
The PESB recommendation will be vetted by the Appointments
Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, after the go-ahead of anti-corruption bodies such
as the CVC and CBI.
A commerce graduate and Chartered Accountant by education,
Gupta has more than 31 years of working experience at Indian Oil
Corporation (IOC), the nation's largest oil refining and fuel
marketing company. He has been Director (Finance) of IOC since
August 3, 2019.
India-Oman joint military exercise Al Najah-IV kicks off
The contingents of the Indian Army and Royal Army of Oman began the
Joint Military Exercise 'Al Najah-IV' on Monday at the Foreign Training
Node of Mahajan Field Firing Ranges, Pokhran, Rajasthan. This will be
the 4th Edition of the India Oman Joint Military Exercise 'Al Najah-IV'. It
will go on till August 13

PSLV-C53 rocket carrying three Singapore satellites


launched by ISRO
Three Singaporean satellites were successfully launched by the Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as part of a commercial mission
for the New Space India Limited. This was the space agency’s second
launch of the year; its first, had put an Indian Earth Observation
Satellite in orbit. The space agency also carried six in-orbit experiments
mounted on the fourth stage of the rocket on the current mission in
addition to the commercial satellites.

Gujarat becomes first state to launch semiconductor policy


The Gujarat government has announced a dedicated ‘Gujarat Semiconductor
Policy 2022-27’ with a view to generating at least 2,00,000 new employment
opportunities during a period of five years. The Gujarat government has also
decided to develop a “semicon city” which would be a part of the Dholera
Special Investment Region.
Weightlifter Sanket Sargar wins silver
India’s Sanket Sargar has scripted history, by
becoming the first athlete from India to win a
medal at Commonwealth Games 2022. He
won a silver medal in the men’s 55kg
event with a total of 248kg (113kg in snatch,
135 in clean and jerk) to finish behind
Malaysia’s Aniq Mohamad, who took gold with
a total of 249 kg (107kg in snatch, 142kg in
clean and jerk).

Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur wins bronze


India’s Harjinder Kaur claimed the bronze medal in the women’s 71kg
weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2022 at Birmingham.
England’s Sarah Davies won gold with a Commonwealth Games
record of 229kg, while young Alexis Ashworth of Canada won silver
with a total lift of 214kg.

indigenously built aircraft
carrier INS Vikrant from its
Manufacturer, Cochin Shipyard. The
commissioning of the ship is likely
to take place on August 15
during India's Independence Day

The Vikrant has been built through three phases of


cooperation between the Ministry of Defence and
the CSL. The first phase was completed by 2007,
the second in December 2014, and the last in
October 2019. It has been constructed at a cost
of approximately Rs. 20,000 crores.
• India's first-ever auction for 5G spectrum concluded today, with spectrum
5G Spectrum auction ends, worth ₹1,50,173 crore being sold. Reports said billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio emerged as
the top bidder to consolidate its leadership position.

Russia to quit
Space Station
after 2024:

• Russia will walk out of an over two-decade-


long partnership on the International Space
Station that shaped space exploration in the
post-cold-war world.
• Russia is all set to exit the International
Space Station after 2024. Russia took this
decision after escalation of tensions between
Russia and the West due to Russian military
intervention in Ukraine and sanctions against
Russia.
• Russia and the United States have been
working side by side on the International Space
Station since 1998, when it was deployed.
Reliance joins Indian
Olympic Association
as principal partner
• Reliance Industries (RIL) has
partnered with Indian Olympic
Association (IOA) to set up
first-ever India House at Paris
Olympics 2024. RIL-IOA
partnership is directed
towards elevation of
performances of Indian
athletes. They will also extend
support to national sports
federations.
