Section 2: Planes

Exercise level 2

1. Find the equation of the plane that is parallel to 3x  2 y  5 z  3 and passes

through the point (2, -1, 0).

2. The planes x  y  3z  4 and 4 x  2 y  kz  3 are perpendicular. Find the value

of k.

3. A plane contains three points A (5, -2, 1), B (3, 0, 2) and C (1, -1, -3). Show that
the vector 3i  4 j  2k is perpendicular to the plane, and hence find the equation
of the plane.

4. Find, in vector form, the equation of the plane that passes through the points
P (1, 1, 0), Q (2, -3, -1) and R (4, 2, 1).

5. Two planes have equations r.(3i  j  k )  4 and r.(i  j  3k )  1 .

(i) Find the acute angle between the two planes.
(ii) A third plane is perpendicular to both of these planes and passes through the
point (2, 0, 1). Find the equation of the plane.
