Basic Productivity Presentation Tool

Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Will it attract or not attract?

Grade Level/Content Area: First grade/Physical Science
Content Standard Addressed: S1P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to
demonstrate the effects of magnets on other magnets and other objects.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and
1.6.d: Students publish or present content that be able to do by the end of this lesson:

intended audiences. show how they can use the information they
learned about magnetism in this lesson.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Students will be able to identify how magnets effects other magnets and objects through
experimenting with magnets and recording their finding in a PowerPoint.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: PowerPoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will watch the storytelling video I created about magnetism. We will have a
discussion as a class about some of the important information found in the video. I would add
the additional information that is needed in for the activity and presentation they will be
doing. Then I will pass out the activity that will have a list of objects that students will be
testing with magnets to determine if they are attracted to magnets or not. Then after they

experiment and fill out their worksheets. I will show them how to create their PowerPoints.
So they will all have a different topic of magnetism to do their PowerPoints on with their
experiment findings as support and evidence to support their claims. I will monitor their
progress and provide feedback as needed. Then students will present their PowerPoints to
the class to finish this unit and prove their understanding.
Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts?
This activity will probably take three days to complete in class. The first day will be watching
the video and the class discussion. The second day will be the experimenting and creating
their PowerPoint. The third day will be presenting day. The computer time for the
presentation will be co-engagement between the teacher and individual students depending
on the computer skills of the students. The students will be able to watch videos and read
books about how magnetism works to extend their learning of the topic.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
PowerPoint is relevant for most students with or without disabilities. It will also work for
English language learners. PowerPoint allows for recording form the app; it can read words
and provide captioning in many different languages. PowerPoint can keep student’s interest
with the use of fun animations.
Reflecting on enhanced learning:
I think that students are always seem excited to learn about magnets. I think the technology
implementation will be difficult, but maybe not as difficult as I think since children are around
technology at a young age.
