Executive Summary

The operations of a company or organization are the main focus of operations

management. Its responsibility is to make sure that the organization transforms all
inputs into results effectively and efficiently. Planning, arranging, and supervising a
company's operations are all part of operations management. In order to succeed over
the long term, an organization must balance costs and revenues in a way that
maximizes operating profit and efficiency. Ensure that all of the resources—people,
equipment, innovation, and information—are used effectively and efficiently by
managing operations. Without good operations management, there may be employee
conflict and organizational uncertainty (Hayes, 2022).

By utilizing the methods found in operations management, you will be able to see
advancements in the monitoring of profitability, manufacturing know-how, and
regulatory compliance. Given how closely tied operations management is to all of an
organization's core functions, it is imperative to comprehend how these techniques
can be helpful.

In this study, the researcher will pinpoint and look into a specific brand or company's
corporate practices. Furthermore, you'll see the issues the researcher addresses and get
the appropriate guidance. According to this report, the particular brand or business
selected can utilize the Six Sigma framework. advice on how to maintain an
advantage over competitors' businesses is also provided.

Introduction

Shampoo is a product that we all use on a regular basis. There are numerous varieties
of shampoos available in any given store, and each one advertises the presence of a
unique ingredient that makes it different from its competitors. How is shampoo made,
exactly? Why are they required to perform the tasks they do?

One of the most well-known brand globally is Dove owned by a huge company
“Unilever”. When the newly developed, ground-breaking beauty cleansing bar was
introduced in the US in 1957, Dove was born. Thanks to its patented mixture of gentle
cleansers and moisturizing cream, Dove's famous Beauty Bar rinses cleaner than soap
and leaves skin clean, soft, and smooth. In the US, Canada, and France,
dermatologists consistently rank this product as the best brand to use, and
dermatologists around the world firmly endorse it.

Dove transformed from a moisturizing Beauty Bar into a global brand that sells a
range of goods, including body washes, hand and body lotions, facial cleansers,
deodorants, shampoos, conditioners, and hair styling products. Following the launch
of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty in 2004, the Dove Self-Esteem Fund was
created in 2006. The mission of the organization is to "be a change agent to educate
and inspire girls on a wider definition of beauty and to make them feel more confident
about themselves." Only available for online viewing, Dove's short films include
Daughters, Evolution, Onslaught, and Amy (Dove, 2022).

Problem

3
Even though the fact that Dove is one of the most recognizable brands of skin and hair
care products and uses only organic ingredients, not all of the ingredients are suitable
for human bodies. Some businesses that produce the same goods have their flaws and
failures. There is no exception to this rule with Dove. Some people might not find it
as good as everyone who likes Dove because they have gained popularity among
many people for its high quality. Since the 1950s, they have been growing, but due to
a wide range of issues, both their popularity and sales are rapidly decreasing. In this
research paper, we'll talk about the main issue that makes Dove a product that is
gradually driving away profits and turning away potential customers.

 Ingredients Issue
The main ingredient found in Dove shampoo is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). This
ingredient can cause skin irritation and even burns if it gets into your eyes or on your
skin. SLS can also damage hair if you use this product on your head because it strips
away all of your natural oils from your scalp, which causes dandruff and dryness.
Another ingredient found in Dove shampoo is cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB),
which can cause eye irritation when used on skin as well. Other ingredients include
propylene glycol, purified water, hydroxyethylcellulose, disodium laureth sulfate
(SLES), sodium chloride, fragrance/ essential oil blend and parfum/ cosmetic
colorant. These are just some of the ingredients that are found within each bottle of
Dove shampooDove shampoo is a brand of shampoo that is produced by the company
called “Dove”. This company was founded in 1946 and it sells many different types
of products such as soap, lotions, and other beauty products. The main product that
this company produces is Dove shampoo which has been around for over fifty years
now.

 Defect and Safety Issues

The product has been banned from use in Australia and New Zealand due to its
harmful effects on human health (Shampoo Ingredient List). In addition, there have
been several lawsuits filed against Dove for using SLS on their products without
disclosing that fact on their packaging (Consumer Reports). There are many
alternatives available when you want a shampoo but don’t want one with SLS or any
other harmful ingredients (Alternatives To Dove Shampoo).

Formaldehyde was found in the majority of shampoos in 2011 by University of

California researchers (Kurtz, 2022). Because formaldehyde is a known carcinogen,
prolonged exposure to high concentrations of it can result in cancer. The fact that the
majority of people are unaware of the effects formaldehyde has on the body when it is
inhaled into the lungs ("This shows how many people may have been affected by this
discovery"). Formaldehyde Air purifiers are the item I'll be talking about. In order to
remove dangerous airborne particles, air purifiers can be used in homes. In addition to
irritating your skin, eyes, and respiratory system, these particles can cause a number
of diseases.

 Customers Perspective
Dove shampoos, particularly on dry and sensitive scalps, can irritate the scalp. Many
of the company's products continue to contain allergens like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

4
that can irritate the scalp. But the company also offers fragrance- and sulfate-free
options (Kravos, 2022).

Due to the harmful substances in the company's products, some of these issues have
resulted in extreme measures, such as lawsuits being filed against the company, which
has resulted in a great deal of criticism.

Project Description

 Proposed Project

The researcher for Dove's Company made a proposal or creative solution, which will
be the topic of this section of the research paper.

Internal Process

Among other things, it's necessary for a corporation to function internally. Dove's
internal procedures, which are the root of their product's problems, are one area where
they fall short. They must carry out thorough research in order to fully comprehend
the types of components they are using and the benefits that will be offered to their
buyers.

In order to evaluate their goods and determine whether the ingredients are safe for the
skin and intended to benefit it, they should indeed additionally operate with new
experts. They should also experiment with more ingredients and carry out in-depth
research on them in order to create a completely new product that should benefit the
consumers.

Product Quality

Development and research are absolutely necessary, but so is product quality since
this is how consumers decide whether a product will be helpful or not, whether it will
improve their hair and safety while using it, and whether it will be useful in the first
place. The researcher offered an alternative that Dove might want to take into
consideration since its dry shampoo product has received criticism. They could create
a substance or an alternative that accomplishes the same goal but in a much safer way,
boosting their output and sales in the process.

Dove’s Proposed Alternative Component

The researcher came up with the idea to use a much safer product in place of the
original. Because it doesn't harm the body's internal or external components, baby
powder would be a safer substitute for Dove's dry shampoo, claim the research's
sources.

The experts claim that baby powder can be used as dry shampoo. It can enable you to
go longer between shampoos by absorbing the extra oil and impurities from your
scalp. Applying a generous amount of powder that is appropriate for the length and
thickness of your hair, then brush or comb it all the way through to the ends. There

5
are a few crucial precautions you must take before using baby powder on your hair,
but it can be used successfully to produce the desired results (HairGuider, 2022).

Analysis:
Six Sigma of Operations
The Six Sigma methodology was developed in the 1980s as a set of tools and
techniques for process improvement by a scientist at Motorola. Its methodology
emphasizes statistical improvements to a business process while supporting
qualitative success measurements (Hayes, 2022).

To improve business functionality and quality control, the Six Sigma Operation uses
project management, financial analysis, and statistics. The DMAIC Six Sigma
methodology consists of five steps: defining, measuring, analyzing, improving, and
controlling.

6
The procedure uses a standard procedure known as DMAIC, which will be used in
this study to aid in addressing the problems mentioned above.

 Define

This is critical to Six Sigma’s success. As its name suggests, Define is about
describing the problem and setting the goal (Sage, 2018). The company itself will lose
customers and the pride of its organizations, which have been around for many
decades, if Dove does not take into account the needs and satisfaction of its
customers. They also need to be able to understand the consequences of their errors.
The main objectives here are to restore public confidence and enhance operation
management.

 Measure

In the measure phase, the goal is to collect data, validate the measurement system,
establish a baseline for the current process, and determine the process capability. A
wide variety of concepts and tools are available for the six sigma measure phase
(Hessing, 2019). Dove's operations management needs to assess whether the issues
they have identified in the first stage are resolved by the company's current processes.

 Analyse

In the analyze phase, significant factors and inputs that significantly affect the output
are identified using statistical tools like hypothesis testing. Additionally, probable root
causes are listed and the process map is reviewed to increase efficiency (Hessing,
2019). At this point, Dove should focus on addressing the root causes of the problem
by taking into account all of the elements of their operations. Everyone involved
should know what needs to be done when the phase is finished.

 Improve

You can now begin your search for solutions to the root causes of the issues by
improving. It is the most creative stage of the DMAIC process because it relies less on
statistical analysis and more on asking people to propose solutions (Sage, 2018).
Dove's operation management should now decide which components require
improvement in order to operate more effectively. They will start developing
solutions at this point, standardizing any process changes that might be required, and
evaluating the advantages for the company as well as the effectiveness and efficiency
it adds to overall operations. Now is the time to put the recommended fixes into
action.

 Control

The "Control" phase marks the end of the Six Sigma DMAIC model. The primary
purpose of this stage is to ensure that everything that was created and the gains that
were made in the "Improve" phase of the DMAIC cycle are maintained for a long
time after the project is finished (6sigmastudy, 2021). The management of Dove will

7
focus on maintaining the efficacy of the new product after implementing the solutions
in order to achieve its objectives. Continuous improvement must be practiced in order
to keep up with the market's ongoing changes and the needs of the customers.
Positivity in the media and from customers can increase productivity, which increases
cash flow.

Recommendation

To assist them in resolving their current problems, Dove should make use of
operational management tools. It will not only help them become more efficient, but it
will also give them the opportunity to learn from and adjust to various circumstances
that present difficulties for their corporate strategy.

Failure is defined as a product not meeting the needs of its intended market. There are
a number of reasons why this failure occurred, but the most common one is that the
product was poorly developed or lacked a clear vision from the beginning. Dove,
which is renowned for providing self-care products for many years, should
continuously take customer feedback into account and offer high-quality, secure
products.

It is advised that the company (Dove) should conduct in-depth research and have a
formal discussion about the quality of their products before making new products
available to the general public. To create products that are more appealing and long-
lasting, management should use creativity and innovation. So, it is important to focus
on product quality, which greatly enhances the brand's competitive advantage.

Conclusion

A company needs to keep up effective operations management in order to expand and

enhance its operations. To increase productivity and deal with the current operational
problems, it was suggested that Dove implement six sigma of operations. The report
offers ideas and options that could be useful in resolving the operational issues that
Doves are currently experiencing. In general, a business cannot be defined by its
failure because every successful enterprise overcame the worst case scenarios to
achieve success. Dove must keep improving by reflecting on its mistakes and
maintaining its standing in the marketplace.

In this evaluation, the researcher recognized the significance of six sigma operations
as well as dealing with a product problem, particularly one that was in the area of
business management. The researcher might benefit from this in the future when it
comes to the creation of new products and potential difficulties.
