A Lesson Plan in English 10

I. Learning Competency:

MELC – Appraise the unity of plot, setting and characterization in a material viewed to
achieve the writer’s purpose.

Objectives:
At the end of the session, learners should be able to:
a. Identify the plot and the elements of the story;
b. Participate in class discussion by expressing their insights and ideas based on
the
story; and
c. Write a poem about the themes found in the story.

II. Subject Matter:


Lesson: “Orpheus” by Alice Low
References: Celebrating Diversity through World Literature, page 377- 380
Instructional Materials: Audio-visual materials, Copies of the Literary Text and Activity
Sheets, laptop, projector, & speaker

Values Integration: Trust in both God and in love, are necessary.

III. Procedure
Preparatory Activities:
- Prayer
- Classroom management
- Checking of attendance
- Review of the past lesson about the story, “The Gorgon’s Head.”

Motivation:
The teacher will ask the students who among them are fond of listening to music, what kind
of music they listen to, and/or who are their favourite artists. After review, give an
introduction of the new lesson about the myth, “Orpheus” by Alice Low.

IV: Activity
The teacher will show some pictures to the students about the myth, Orpheus by Alice Low.
Then, the teacher will let them identify or name what they see on the pictures.

V. Analysis

The teacher will post a picture of a noble
person. He is the author of the story that will be
watch later. The teacher asks them to fill in the
box with the correct information. Get the
answer from the information posted on the
board.

VI. Abstraction
The teacher will let the students watch the 8-minute and 38 seconds video presentation
of the story “Orpheus.” The students will carefully watch and listen and note the significant
events of the story.
After watching the teacher will asks the students the following questions:
1. What was the greatest strength of Orpheus? What was his weakness?
2. Why did Orpheus decide to rescue his wife from the underworld?
3. Why did Orpheus look back to see if Eurydice was following him?
4. What reasons might the gods have for allowing Orpheus and Eurydice to be
reunited?
5. What is the condition that the gods gave for allowing Orpheus and Eurydice to return
to Earth?
6. What main characteristics of this text makes it a myth?

After discussing the story, the teacher makes a quick discussion about the elements of the
story.

C. Application
The class will be divided into 5 groups and they will be given a worksheet to identify the
plot and elements of the story through a bulb puzzle. The teacher will conduct a draw for
each group leader, for them to get one element. They will be given 2 minutes to explain the
element assigned to them.
IV. Assessment:

The students will be tasked to write their own poem about the themes found in the myth or
story. The poem must be at least three stanzas long.

V. Assignment
Directions: Watch the 2012 film adaptation of “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel. While watching,
take note of the important details in the movie on your notebook.
