COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Tuberculosis

Communicable diseases are most often the leading causes of illnesses in the country today. Most
often, they afflict the most vulnerable, the young and the elderly. They have numerous economic,
psychological, disabling and disfiguring effects to the afflicted individuals, families, and
communities. What is doubly threatening is the emergence of newly discovered diseases and the
re-emergence of old ones. In this situation, the need for information about the diseases is very
vital.

Tuberculosis (TB) is considered as the world’s deadliest disease and remains a major public
health problem in the Philippines. It is primarily a respiratory disease but can also affect other
organs of the body and is common among malnourished individuals living in crowded area.
Because of its continued resurgence, TB has been declared as a global emergency by the World
Health Organization in the year 1993. In lieu to this, the DOH established the National
Tuberculosis Control Program with the main goal of making the country see TB as no longer a
public health problem by imploring strategies which strengthens prevention, control, and
management of said disease in the community.

By following the program, the community gains access to quality service and strengthened
management of TB control services in all levels. Also, the health-seeking habits of every
individual, both infected and not, are enhanced.

Outdoor and In-door Gardening
There is increasing evidence that exposure to plants and green space, and particularly to
gardening, is beneficial to mental and physical health. Health professionals should
therefore encourage their patients to make use of green space and to work in gardens, and
should pressure local authorities to increase open spaces and the number of trees, thus
also helping to counteract air pollution and climate change.
