INTRODUCTION

Distance learning is defined as the use of technology to bridge a gap in physical

distance between a teacher and a student (Matthews, 1999). In line with this, Due to the
spread of the pandemic, traditional in-person classes have been replaced with online
learning, which is a new method of acquiring knowledge through the application of
technology. Online learning platform is a webspace or portal for educational content and
resources that offers a student everything they need in one place: lectures, resources,
opportunities to meet and chat with other students and more. It is also an excellent way for
the student and the teacher to monitor student progress. Moreover, Students can now use
their personal electronic devices, including laptops, tablets, and cell phones, as well as of
course making use of internet access/internet connectivity. Three distinct types of online
education are distinguishable from one another: synchronous sessions, asynchronous
learning, and blended education.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

 Define the meaning of Distance Learning,

 Differentiate the differences between synchronous, asynchronous, and blended
learning,
 Identify the pros and cons of each category of online learning.
 Share their experiences after 2 years of online learning.
 Describe what is an online learning platform; and
 Identify the different online learning platforms, use in an online learning
environment.

LEARNING CONTENT

 What is Distance Learning?

 Different Platforms use in an Online Learning Environment
 Online Learning: SYNCHRONOUS, ASYNCHRONOUS, BLENDED LEARNING

I. What is Distance Learning?

Distance Learning
 It refers to instruction and learning that are delivered remotely as a whole course or
through a large portion of it.
 Technology plays a vital role in allowing distance learning to happen, Synchronously
or asynchronously.
i. Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning
Synchronous Learning- refers to a learning event in which a group of
participants is engaged in learning at the same time.
Asynchronous Learning- learning happens when the teacher, the
learner and the other participants are not engaged in the learning
process at the same time.
ii. Three Things to Consider before transitioning too Asynchronous
learning:
 How and when will you provide feedback
 How will you make lessons accessible and entertaining?
 How will you promote higher order thinking?
II. Different Platforms use in an Online Learning Environment

1. Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is cloud-based team collaboration software that is part of
the Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suite of applications. The core capabilities in
Microsoft Teams include business messaging, calling, video meetings and file
sharing. Businesses of all sizes can use Teams. Microsoft Teams is especially
useful for remote collaboration because it keeps dispersed teams of workers
connected and communicating. The COVID-19 pandemic compelled
organizations worldwide to use Microsoft Teams extensively as well as other
collaboration software as a communications platform for remote work.
Microsoft Teams is usually deployed across entire organizations and not just
within certain company departments. In some cases, Teams could replace email
for internal company communication among employees.
2. Google Classroom
Google Classroom is an online platform that is equipped with tools that
enables the teachers to facilitate learning such as setting up an activity or
assignments for the students where they can check the submitted works of the
learners and grade them accordingly. This was originally designed to be used
with laptops in digitalizing the learning means for the learners and the students
that allows for a better way of efficiently share and inform not only the learners
but also the educators in their progress of learning.
3. Schoology
You can create your own online distance education learning system using
any of these platforms. MOOCs Another recent modality to learning is the
Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). A learning management system (LMS) that
connects all the people, content, and systems that fuel education. Schoology is
like a teacher's website or an extension of their classroom online.
Announcements, special dates, pictures, newsletters, discussions, lessons,
videos, etc. could all be on a teacher's Schoology page. Students are enrolled in
Schoology by the school through our PowerSchool, student information system.
Students log into Clever to access Schoology.
4. Moodle
Moodle is a free and open-source learning management system written in
PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. Moodle is used for
blended learning, distance education, flipped classroom and other online
learning schemes in schools, universities, workplaces and other sectors. The
word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic
Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education
theorists. It's also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through
something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering
that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both to the way
Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach
studying or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler.
5. Edmodo
Edmodo is an educational network that aims at providing teachers with tools
to help them connect and communicate with their students and parents. Via the
Edmodo app or website, teachers can share content, texts, videos, homework
and assignments with their students online. Edmodo is an educational website
that takes the ideas of a social network and refines them and makes it
appropriate for a classroom. Using Edmodo, students and teachers can reach out
to one another and connect by sharing ideas, problems, and helpful tips. A
teacher can assign and grade work on Edmodo; students can get help from the
entire class on Edmodo. It is a safe environment. There is no bullying or
inappropriate content, because the teacher can see everything that is posted on
Edmodo. Also, parents can join the class to bring a level of transparency that is
difficult to achieve without technology. All in all, Edmodo is a great companion to
just about any class
6. Educause
EDUCAUSE is a non-profit association with the mission is to advance higher
education using information technology.
III. Online Learning: SYNCHRONOUS, ASYNCHRONOUS, BLENDED LEARNING

1. Online Learning: SYNCHRONOUS SESSION

 Learning that involves a group of students engaging in learning at the
same time.
 Example/s: Online video conferencing (Microsoft teams, Google
Classroom)
 Benefits:
1. Interaction between participants.
2. Exchange of knowledge and experience between participants.
3. Real-time feedback for the instructor

2. Online Learning: ASYNCHRONOUS SESSION

 A student – centered method using online learning resources to facilitate
information outside the constraints of time and place among people.
 Example/s: Pre-recorded video, Narrated Slide Deck, Ed Puzzle.
 Benefit/s: Participants can learn in their own time and schedule.

3. Online Learning: BLENDED LEARNING

 Also known as “hybrid learning”.
 Students might attend a class taught by a teacher in a traditional
classroom setting, while also independently completing online
components of the course outside the classroom.
