FT Spring semester 2023

Course: BMMEE (CT3608)
Assignment 2
Three roof configurations were proposed for a roof in hot
climate.

Type – A

 Top layer - Cement concrete with 80 mm thickness with

exposed surface reflectivity of 0.35
 Middle layer – RCC slab of 125mm thickness
 Bottom layer – Cement plaster of 12mm thickness

Type – B
Figure 1: Type A roof assembly
 Top layer - China mosaic tile of 20 mm with exposed
surface reflectivity of 0.70.
 Second layer - Cement concrete with 80 mm thickness
 Middle layer – RCC slab of 125mm thickness
 Bottom layer – Cement plaster of 12mm thickness

Type – C

 Top layer - Cement concrete with 80 mm thickness. Exposed surface concrete is coated with
a paint of reflectivity 0.85. Thickness of the paint coating is negligible.
 Middle layer – RCC slab of 125mm thickness
 Bottom layer – Cement plaster of 12mm thickness

The monthly average temperature at 1:00 pm is 36 0C and the corresponding solar radiation is 1036
W/m2. The heat transfer coefficient on inner and outer surfaces are 5.88 W/m 2K and 25 W/m2K
respectively. The room temperature is maintained at 27 0C to achieve thermal comfort. Determine
the heat flux (W/m 2) through the roof and temperature at inner and outer surfaces of roof assembly
for the 3 configurations assuming steady state conduction. Comment on the results and suggest the
best configuration. The thermal conductivities of cement concrete, China mosaic, RCC slab and
cement plaster are 1.4 W/m K, 1.5 W/m K, 1.58 W/m K and 0.72 W/m K respectively.

Hint: energy balance of the surface qrad+qconv=q
