Background Information
SURFACE AREA
Surface Area (SA) is the sum of the area of the base(s) and the lateral faces of a
space figure.
The surface area of a rectangular prism is the sum of the lateral area and the areas
of the two bases.
SA = 2 (lw) + 2 (lh) + 2 (wh)
The surface area of a cylinder is the sum of the lateral area and the areas of the two
bases.
SA = (2πrh) + (2πr2)
The surface area of a square pyramid is the sum of the lateral area and the area of
the base.
SA = s2 + 4 (1/2 bh)
The surface area of a cone is the sum of the lateral area and the area of its base.
SA = (πr2) + (πrh)
The surface area of a sphere is four times the area of the great circle
SA = 4 (πr2)
Example no. 1
Understand
What is asked?
• The amount of rubber needed to produce 20 balls.
What are the given facts?
• The radius is 4.89 decimeters
Plan.
Which formula shall we use to solve the problem?
The ball is a sphere. Hence, SA= 4πr2 will be used.
Solve.
Show your computation
SA = 4∏r2
= 4 (3.14) (4.892)
= 4 (3.14) ( 23.9121)
= (12.56) ( 23.9121)
SA = 300.335976
Since we need to produce 20 balls, so we need to multiply SA by 20.
Hence,
300.335976 X 20 = 6006.71952 or 6007
Check.
Go back to your computation. Check if the given dimension is properly
substituted for the formula. Check also the flow of the computation.
Example no. 2
Irish is wrapping a present. The box she uses a rectangular prism with a length
of 18 inches, width 10 inches, and a height of 4 inches. Find how many square inches
of paper she needs to wrap the entire box.
Understand
What is asked?
• The amount of paper needed to wrap the box.

Plan.
Which formula shall we use to solve the problem?
The box is a rectangular prism. Hence, SA= 2 (lw) + 2 (lh) + 2 (wh) will be
used
Solve.
Show your computation
SA= 2 (lw) + 2 (lh) +2 (wh)
SA= 2 (18 x 10) + 2 (18 X 4) + 2 (10 X 4)
= 2 (180) + 2 (72) + 2 (40)
= 360 + 144 + 80
SA = 584
Answer: You need at least 584 square inches wrapper to cover the box.

Example no. 3.
A salt container has the shape of a cylinder. The radius of the container is 1.5 inches,
and the height is 6 inches. Find the surface area of the container. Use π = 3.14.
Understand
What is asked?
• The surface area of the container
What are the given facts?
• The radius of the container is 1.5 inches, and the height is 6
inches
Plan.
Which formula shall we use to solve the problem?
Since the container is a cylinder, let us use SA = (2πrh) + (2πr2).
Solve.
Show your computation.
SA = (2πrh) + (2πr2)
= 2( 3.14 X 1.5 X 6) + 2 (3.14 X 1.52)
= 2 (28.26) + 2 (7.065)
=56.52 + 14.13
SA = 70.65 in2
Check.
Go back to your computation. Check if the given dimension is properly
substituted for the formula. Check also the flow of the computation.
