Planning to facilitate aircraft movement

• Taxiway planning principles:

• Aircraft that have just landed should not interfere with aircraft taxiing to takeoff.

• Taxi routes should provide shortest distance between aircraft parking areas and
runways.

• At busy airports, taxiways are normally located at various points along runways so
that landing aircraft can leave the runways as quickly as possible.

• High-speed exit taxiways reduces the time a landing aircraft is on the runway and
are typically aligned at a 30- to 45-degree angle connecting the runway with the
parallel taxiway.

• Where possible, taxiways are planned so as not to cross an active runway.

Facilitating passenger and cargo movement

• Component systems of the airport terminal:

• Apron and gate system

– Planned and managed according to the characteristics of aircraft.

• Passenger and baggage handling system

– Planned and managed to accommodate the needs of passengers and their
baggage in their transition to or from the aircraft.

18
Facilitating passenger and cargo movement

• How many gates to plan for? Depends on:

– Number and type of aircraft scheduled to use a gate .
– Each aircraft’s scheduled turnaround time (i.e. gate occupancy time).
– Type of gate-usage agreement that each airline has with the airport.

24
Activity 4.2

• Identify key passenger airlines handled for the various terminals at SIN and HKG.
• What are the similarities and differences between the two key air hubs in Asia?
• What is the likely impact on airport performance in the post COVID-19 scenario?

2019 SIN HKG

Passenger traffic 68.3 million 71.5 million
Aircraft operations 382,000 420,000
Cargo traffic 2.0 million tonnes 4.8 million tonnes
Tourism arrivals 19.1 million 55.9 million (43.8 China)
GDP US$363 billion US$373 billion

awarded airport. What are possible reasons? Which of these will be most critical in
the coming decade?
