Charlotte Nemec - Week 1 Journal
This week at The Bright House was relatively quiet, as there were not a lot of clients who
came in, and no one came in for an interview or medical exam. However, during our down time,
myself and the other interns and volunteers were able to complete administrative tasks around
the office, which helped us get familiar with the location and the people who work here. We also
completed all of our required trainings including mandated reporter training, cultural competency
training, and civil rights training. Through the trainings, I learned the responsibilities of a
mandated reporter: the different types of abuse, signs that a child is being abused, and what to do
if I suspect a child of being abused. I also learned the importance of cultural competency,
conscious of the way I interact with them, and instead of being color blind, be conscious of color
On Wednesday morning, the child advocate at the office, Shelley, told us the story of one
of the clients who came in earlier in the week. She told us the story about how the boy was being
abused and molested by his grandfather, and the information The Bright House is providing to
the police could remove the boy from the grandfather’s house and return custody to his mother.
After I had completed all of my trainings and was cleared to work with children, I was
able to sit with a young girl who was in the lobby while her sister and mother were in counseling.
Her mother was taking a nap in their car while the girl was in counseling, then I came to keep her
occupied, so her mother could continue to rest and her sister could receive counseling, then vise
versa. The girl seemed to be very conscious of the situation her family is in, that her mom is
tired, because she worked the night shift, and they come regularly to receive counseling from
Antoinette.
