Dry Cargoworthy Inspection and Repair Criteria

V.2 - 16 Jan 2015

Criteria for use on one way loaded moves of Dry Freight containers

This guideline outlines the inspection and repair criteria for dry freight containers. It was intended for one-way trip in a
cargo loadable condition. The container must remain safe to move whilst safeguarding the integrity of any general cargo.
The container must satisfy the requirements of CSC and TIR.

Component Acceptable Damage Tolerance

ISO DIMENSIONS
Main structure Dents up to ISO +10mm on side casting face and ISO +5mm on end casting face
All Panels Dents up to ISO+40mm on all direction of casting faces
Underside Dents up to lower casting face

CORNER POSTS Up to 25mm or ISO +5mm end face, or ISO +10mm side face
J Bar Must not interfere with the doors
Corner fittings Repair if deformation, cracked or failure

RAILS
Front / Rear Top Rails Dents up to 40mm
Top Side rails Dents up to 30mm
All bottom Rails & Sills Dents up to 50mm on web (no limits on flanges). Flange cuts if extending into web, weld only.
Rain Gutter Must not interfere with the door operations

PANELS
Front, Side, Doors Dents up to 50mm into cube (up to 20mm into cube for Seacell)
Roof, Header Plate. Dents up to 70mm into the cube from floor to roof, repair only if holed
Ventilators & Gaskets Functioning & watertight or closed off
Lashing bars or rings No action for missing or damages lashing bars or rings; replace only if required for trip

DOORS Operable, light and watertight.

Data plates Must be present and properly fitted

UNDERCARRIAGE
Crossmembers, Outrigger, Dents up to 75mm on web (no limit on flanges) horizontal cuts in webs to 500mm.
Forklift Pockets, Flange cuts if extending into web, weld only
Gooseneck, Upper flange separation from floor up to 13mm over full length of the cross-member
Forklift pocket Straps Broken, cracked, cut, torn or missing – Repair

FLOOR / INTERIOR
Plywood floor Repair only if not light and watertight
No action on gouge or delamination. Fit overlay patch if floor strength affected.
Adjacent height difference maximum allowable 13mm
No action if top 3 layers ply loosen or peeled with no additional damage or affect the floor strength.

Floor Fastenings Missing, broken / loose up to 3 adjacent fasteners. No protruding fasteners on interior floor.
Threshold Plate Remove if dent upward more than 10mm or affecting cargo loading

CORROSION Only using inspection hammer to test on deep seated corrosion; repair holes by welding. Do not cut
out corroded material

CLEANLINESS No infestation, foul odours, hazardous cargo residue, wet, sticky or transferable residue
No offensive or possible offensive graffiti / foreign markings

MARKINGS/LABELS Must have all ISO decals; renew if missing or not legible.
(Exterior/Interior) Remove or over-paint all hazardous cargo decals
Graffiti / Foreign Markings, remove or over-paint only if offensive or possibly offensive,

Dry Cargoworthy Inspection and Repair Criteria
V.2 - 16 Jan 2015
Criteria for use on one way loaded moves of Dry Freight containers

In general, apply the outline repair criteria below if beyond the damage acceptable tolerance, and must meet CIC and TIR
requirement.

Component Repair methods

GENERAL Adopt most economical repair methods within structural strength, safety, light and water-tightness.
No repair on any improper repairs, unless they affect the structural integrity.
No cosmetic repair or touch-up on interior or exterior of the container.
Used materials are allowed but Seaco shall obtain 50% discount or no cost on used material.
Cannibalizing parts from Seaco’s “AS IS” sales units but depot must seek Seaco approval.
All poor appearance condition must be noted on the repair estimate with photos.

STRAIGHTENING All dents only straighten by jack to within the acceptable tolerance, it is not necessary to bring it
back to original profile. No painting / material costs.

STRAIGHTENING AND Cuts, tears or cracks - where possible weld only or straighten sufficiently for welding.
WELDING Corrosion holes - where possible weld only or apply minimum overlay patch. Do not cut out
corroded material.
Any dimensions or shape of overlay patches is allowed so long as welding is viable.

TOP RAILS, POSTS Repair to IICL guidelines

AND CASTINGS

SILLS, BOTTOM RAILS, Cuts, tears or cracks to be welded only or straightened sufficiently for welding up to Web. It is not
CROSSMEMBER AND necessary to bring it back to original profile as long structural strength is unaffected.
UNDER-STRUCTURE No action for cut or torn at flange.
Do not cut out corroded material, only apply minimum overlay patch of used material over corroded
material. The used material must be rust free with equivalent strength and thickness.
Full welding; stitch welding not allowed
It should reduce 40% man-hours without cutting out the original material.

CROSSMEMBERS Do not remove damaged cross members unless unsafe. If possible install a new cross member
back to back as reinforcement. It should reduce man-hours by 40% without cutting out the original
material.
If dents within criteria but cracked up to web, only weld crack, no straightening required.

DOORS Make most economical repair to operational condition

FLOORS Soft or delaminated floors and holes up to 200mm x 200mm, repair with a 4-5mm steel plate
screwed to sound flooring. No limit on steel plate sizes.
Repair holes over 200mm x 200mm to IICL repair methods
Caulk nail holes if required to ensure light / watertight

VENTILATORS Functioning & watertight or closed off

Only seal cracks

MATERIALS Corten steel parts will not be required, but replacement parts must give sufficient strength
In first instance consider Second hand materials / parts acceptable providing they give sufficient strength

PAINT If paint is essential, then only one coat required

Do not paint under -structure repairs
