de Castro, Allen Jay G.

Media is at our fingertips. For many of us, it is accessible almost most of the time.

With this constant access to medium information, our society has evolved and media has

become essential to the formations of our relations and interpretations, and

understanding of local and world events. The media industry is a generative force that

has become a business creating both pop culture and elite culture as well as forming

political opinions and providing general information to the public. This information has

become a commodity. It has brought the world together on a global scale of information

exchange, also known as the knowledge economy. The interconnectedness of media has

become a driving force to globalization. One example of characteristics of globalization

through media industry is the growing level of connectedness among individuals,

societies, and nation-states that occurs on a global level. Another one is the reduction of

time and space between and across borders. And lastly, the development of information

and communication technologies. Media globalization is the direct result of the activities

of powerful transnational capitalistic organizations. In other words, globalization of media,

first and foremost, upholds a capitalistic ideology and promotes consumerism to the

public. This consumerism, like many other sources, is driven by the exploitation of the

third world. What happens to countries the are not involved in this media exchange, like

all other resources on earth, is that there is an unequal distribution of access to media.

For now, it still remains an issue of equity across the globe. Developing countries are

being left behind in this new age furthering their distance from attaining a global standing

in this elite world. The media industry is currently not reaching its full potential and will not
until there is equal participation globally. In order for the media industry to successfully

serve as a tool for globalization, in must include all the countries. Once the Western media

industry stops exploiting and starts including, globalization will continue to expand and

bring our world together. As of now, I can say the media is a fantastic way to ensure a

well-informed and efficient society, and to connect other countries which in turn, develops

them further. The media industry has brought the world together and has become the

very key in globalization. Never has there been a time where the globe was more

connected. The media industry captures and holds our attention, and provides us with

both information and entertainment on a global scale. This can and will continue to grow,

break down our national borders, and create a knowledge-rich world.
