Chemistry Unit Test Review Part II

Atoms, Elements, Compounds & Periodic Table

Textbook Review Pages: 288 – 295 (use to help your studying))

Test Format:
- True /False
- Multiple Choice
- Matching
- Short Answer

The Atom

• What are the three subatomic particles? (Know their location, relative mass and charge)
• Know how to find and use the atomic number, atomic mass
• Know how to find the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons
• Ions: cations and anions – finding the charge of an ion
• Know how to draw a Bohr diagram
• Know how to draw a Bohr-Rutherford diagram
• Know how to draw a Lewis dot diagram

The History of Atom

• Know the Scientists, the model of their atom and what was wrong with their Model and who and how it was improved.

The Periodic Table

• Families/groups versus periods: alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, noble gases, and transition metals
• Make sure you know the specific properties of each group
• Make sure you know how to colour your periodic table
• What does the GROUP number tell us:
o Similar properties
o Number of valence electrons
o Reactivity (the more reactive, the easier to achieve stability)
o Combining capacity (how many bonds an element can make)
• What does the PERIOD tell us: (trends)
o Number of energy levels
o The relative atom radius (size of atom)
o Electron Affinity
§ Metals: the larger the radius, the further the valence electrons are from the nucleus and therefore the
electrons are more easily lost, and more reactive
§ Non-metals: the smaller the radius, the greater the effect the protons can have on attracting electrons, more
easily gain electrons, more reactive

Compounds

• What is an element versus compound

• What is an ionic compound versus covalent compound
• Naming ionic compounds
• Drawing compounds
