Proportion Worksheet

Solving proportions – Type One

Working horizontally:

it can be “easily” seen that the second term is found by multiplying the first term by 5
The value of “x” is found by repeating that process to the first term in the bottom
i.e. multiply the first by 5
e.g. mult by 5
It works with the bottom
(the denominator) too!

so 3(5) = 15 ; x = 15

mult by 5

1. Solve the following proportions. Write your answer in the form x = answer.

a) b) c) d)

x=8 x = 20 x = 15 x = 60

e) f) g) h)

x=6 x = 24 x = 32 x = 60

i) j) k) l)

x = 35 x = 15 x=5 x = 15
Solving proportions – Type Two Don’t forget
about
Working vertically: division!

it can be “easily” seen that the bottom term is found by

multiplying the top term by 3
The value of “x” is found by repeating that process
to the top in the second ratio i.e. multiply the top by 3
e.g.

mult by 3 mult by 3 so 7(3) = 21 ; x = 21

2. Solve the following proportions. Write your answer in the form x = answer.

a) b) c) d)

x = 20 x = 56 x = 18 x = 28

e) f) g) h)

x=5 x=5 x=8 x=2

i) j) k) l)

x=3 x = 54 x = 14 x = 20
Solving proportions – Type Three

When a relation between terms is not easily found (either horizontally or vertically; the proportion must
be solved as an equation. Cross products
are equal in a
e.g. proportion!

cross multiply 2(x)= 3(5) so 2x = 15 ; x= (or 7.5)

since the unknown is

being multiplied by 2;

divide both sides of the

equation by 2

3. Solve the following proportions. Answer in the form x = answer. [improper fractions are fine]

a) b) c) d)

3x = 20 2x = 21 9x = 16 11x = 30

x= x= x= x=

x = 6.7 x = 10.5 x = 1.8 x = 2.7

e) f) g) h)

14x = 30 4x = 50 18x = 16 12x = 75

x= x= x= x=

x = 2.1 x = 12.5 x = 0.9 x = 6.25

4. Use a calculator to solve the following proportions. [round to the nearest tenth]

a) b) c) d)

5x = 42 12x = 221 3.8x = 36.54 0.3x = 3.9

x = 8.4 x = 18.4 x = 9.6 x = 13

e) f) g) h)

x = 5.88 x = 151.7 x = 0.25 x = 0.026

5. Solve the following proportions. Answer in the form x = answer. [improper fractions are fine]
a) b) c) d)

x = 6.7 x = 10.5 x = 1.8 x = 2.7

e) f) g) h)

x = 2.1 x = 12.5 x = 0.9 x = 6.25

6. Use a calculator to solve the following proportions. [round to the nearest tenth]

a) b) c) d)

x = 8.4 x = 18.4 x = 9.6 x = 13

e) f) g) h)

x = 5.88 x = 151.7 x = 0.25 x = 0.026
