Presentation / Content:
Quite literally, the term "philosophy" means, "love
of wisdom." In a broad sense, philosophy is an activity
people undertake when they seek to understand
fundamental truths about themselves, the world in which
they live, and their relationships to the world and to each
other. As an academic discipline philosophy is much the
same. Those who study philosophy are perpetually engaged
in asking, answering, and arguing for their answers to life.
Also, Philosophy is the study of general and
fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values,
reason, mind, and language.

“wisdom.”
Under this definition, 1. Science - the investigation is systematic. It follows certain steps or
four (4) things are to be considered: it employs certain procedure.

2. Natural light of reason - philosophy investigates things, not by

using any other laboratory instrument or investigate tools, neither on
the basis of supernatural revelation.

3. Study of all things - this sets the distinction between philosophy

from other sciences. All other sciences concern themselves with a
particular object of investigation.

4. First cause or highest principle - a principle is that from which

something proceeds in any manner whatsoever.

If you’ve ever wondered whether God exists, whether life has purpose, whether beauty is in the eye of the beholder,
what makes actions right or wrong, or whether a law is fair or just, then you’ve thought about philosophy. And these are
just a few philosophical topics.

But what is philosophy? The question is itself a philosophical question. This module gathered some answers.

WHY DO WE PHILOSOPHIZE?

Remember: Philosophy is based on personal experience. It broadens our horizons in terms of accepting and recognizing
right from wrong.

We use the various branches to better grasp a scenario and how we, as individuals, should accept and embrace its
concepts. We must investigate its origins, components, and purpose in order to ensure that we balance all factors before
making a decision.

We philosophize in order to keep our emotions in check when dealing with a certain object or scenario. Each step
is carefully followed in order to expand our perspective.

WHAT IS PARTIAL AND HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE?

Partial point of view is a perspective that looks at reality based on a single or partial component of a system
whereas the holistic perspective tries to broaden the understanding of reality by taking considerations of other possible
causal agents or factors be it biological, theological, or any other factors.

contributes to it.

REMEMBER!
Philosophical Reflection
It develops the analytical skills of students, especially for evaluating arguments. Philosophy is
a reflective activity that invites students to make explicit their fundamental assumptions and beliefs. Self-
reflection should take the further backward step of inspecting these assumptions and beliefs for internal coherence and
consistency.
