atropurpureus) Leaf Extracts

Name of Proponents: Armado, Reignoah Lei R.; Ilumin, Clarisse C.

Name of Project Adviser: Mr. Avie John Tesorero

Name of School: Malabon National High School

Rationale:
This research introduces the health benefits of Mayana Leaves. The plant is not very popular but is very
abundant and has many health benefits. This project test if Mayana leaf extract can be helpful in
lowering glucose levels.

Research Questions:
1. What will be the effect of different concentrations of mayana leaf extract in reducing blood sugar
levels?
2. Which concentration of mayana leaf extract will give a favorable result in the reduction of blood sugar
levels?
3. Is there a significant difference among the effectivity of different concentrations of mayana leaf
extract in the reduction of blood sugar levels?

Hypothesis:
There is a significant difference between the concentrations of mayana leaf extract in reducing blood
sugar levels.

Engineering Goal:
This project aims to reduce the blood sugar level of people, by achieving this goal; it will be possible for
the product to help prevent risks of heart and vision problems, kidney failures, and other glucose level-
related problems.

Expected Outcome:
The Mayana Leaf extract is expected to have an impact in reducing glucose levels. If expectations are
met, this product will help those suffering from diabetes or have high blood sugar levels.
Procedures:
A. Gathering of Materials
The reagents and one kilogram of mayana leaves will be bought at Bambang Medical Supply (1446 Rizal
Avenue, City of Manila 1014 Metro Manila). The mayana leaves sample will be brought in the BPI
(Bureau of Plant Identification).

B. Extraction of Mayana
The one kilogram of mayana leaves will be dried using a drying oven with a temperature of 35˚C for four
hours. After which, the one kilogram of dried mayana leaves will be soaked on 95% graded ethanol for
24 hours. The mayana leaf solution will be filtered. The filtered mayana leaf solution will be brought to
the UST (University of Sto. Tomas) for extraction using a rotary evaporator (temp.) for an hour.

C. Preparation of Concentrations
Three concentrations of mayana leaf solution will be prepared; 50%, 75%, 100%; each with three
replicates. The negative control will be 500mL of water; the positive control will be 500mg of metformin
diluted in 500mL of water.

Risk and Safety:

In the making of this project, the researcher must wear proper laboratory clothes such as; lab gowns,
gloves, and face masks; to prevent any physical harm of danger that may be caused.

Data and Analysis:

One way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) will be used in determining the results of both the components
based on the different concentration with a level of significance of 0.05. The researchers will use
Software package for Statistical Analysis (SPSS) to compute for the analysis of variance and to construct
the numeric data.
