Chapter 5 Gases
Homework 1
5.1 Substances that exist as gases

5.2 Pressure of a gas

 All gases have the following physical characteristics:
(1) Gases assume the volume and shape of their containers.
(2) Gases are the most compressible of the states of matter.
(3) Gases will mix evenly and completely when confined to the same container.
(4) Gases have much lower densities than liquids and solids.
(5) SI unit of pressure: Pascal (Pa) 1 Pa = 1 N/m2
 Barometer(P177): measuring the atmospheric pressure.
Standard atmospheric pressure:
1 atm = 760 mmHg = 101,325 Pa =101.325 kPa
1 torr =1 mmHg
 Manometer(P178): measuring the pressure of gases other than the atmospheric

Practice
1. A flask containing helium gas is connected to an open-ended mercury manometer.
The open end is exposed to the atmosphere, where the prevailing pressure is 752 torr.
The mercury level in the open arm is 26 mm above that in the arm connected to the
flask of helium. What is the helium pressure, in torr?
A) –26 torr B) 26 torr C) 726 torr D) 778 torr E) none of the above

2.A flask containing argon gas is connected to a closed-ended mercury manometer.

The closed end is under vacuum. If the mercury level in the closed arm is 230. mm
above that in the arm connected to the flask, what is the argon pressure, in torr?
A) –230. B) 230. C) 530. D) 790. E) none of the above

3. The pressure of hydrogen sulfide gas in a container is 35,650 Pa. What is this
pressure in torr?
A) 46.91 torr B) 267.4 torr C) 351.8 torr D) 3612 torr E) 27090 torr

5.3 The gas laws

G11 AP Chemistry Name: Class:

 Boyle’s law
State Boyle's Law and illustrate it with a graph, using standard x-y coordinate axes.
Be sure to label the axes unambiguously with the correct gas variables.

 Charles’s and Gay-Lussac’s law, or simply Charles’s law

State Charles's Law and illustrate it with a graph, using standard x-y coordinate axes.
Be sure to label the axes unambiguously with the correct gas variables.

 Avogadro’s law
State Avogadro's Law.

Practice

1.A sample of N2 has a volume of 1.5 L at a pressure of 600 torr. Calculate the volume
of the gas if the pressure is changed to 760 torr at a constant temperature.

2. At 46℃ a sample of ammonia gas exerts a pressure of 5.3atm. What is the pressure
when the volume of the gas is reduced to one-tenth (0.10) of the original value at the
same temperature?

3. A sample of air occupies 3.8L when the pressure is 1.2atm. (a) What volume does it
occupy at 6.6atm? (b) What pressure is required in order to compress it to 0.075L?
(The temperature is kept constant.)

4. Under Constant-pressure conditions a sample of hydrogen gas initially at 88℃ and

9.6L is cooled until its final volume is 3.4L. What is its final temperature?

5. Molecular chlorine and molecular fluorine combine to form a gaseous product.

Under the same conditions of temperature and pressure it is found that one volume of
Cl2 reacts with three volumes of F2 to yield two volumes of the products. What is the
formula of the product?
