Increase the duration/frequency of the surface blowdown to control conductivity and to improve the boiler
water condition as being slightly brown now. Blowdowns lasting in tens of minutes may be necessary The
Blow downs
dissolved solids that are measured as boiler water conductivity are concentrated at the surface of the boiler
rather than being evenly distributed throughout the boiler. Removing the highly contaminated water at the
boiler water surface quickly and efficiently reduces boiler water conductivity 1

steam phase, they are most efficiently removed by continuous blow down. The water losses are low, since
the blow down line is relatively small in diameter and usually has an orifice installed. This is why, continuous
blow down can be extended to minutes. Continuous blow down is for keeping the conductivity below 700
µS/cm and chloride below 300 ppm. It is also being used for lowering treatment levels, should they exceed
the maximum recommended limits
Bottom blow down is for removal of suspended solids. Suspended solids float in the water and can be seen
by the naked eye. The main application is to remove the soft hardness precipitation as the result of the
phosphate treatment. If good make-up water (distillate) is being used, there is no need to provide more than
one weekly bottom blow down. With the blow down valve fully opened, its duration should be 10 - 20 seconds
only, or even less, if the boiler manufacturer recommends. Bottom blow down in excess of 20 seconds will
reduce its effect in combination with unnecessary water, treatment chemical, and energy losses

REVIEW OF LOGS SECTION
program logs 1
Boiler water testing is performed every other day, this is insufficient. Recommended to perform boiler water
testing every day for an optimum control of the daily chemical dosage 1
SAFETY SECTION OK; results from safety assessment 1
Vessel exhibited accepted practices and had good safety knowledge 1
