Math 9.

The sum of the square of two consecutive integers is 85. What are the integers?

Here, alam na natin that the equation equates to 85, so let’s write that

¿ 85

Next step, since sabi “it is the square of two consecutive numbers,” our equation will look like
this:

( x )2+(x +1)²=85

Why does it look like that? It’s because pag hinanap natin ang consecutiveness of numbers, we
always need to find the order of numbers. For example, 7-8, 9-10, 22-23. We can say that’s
consecutive kasi it is in the righ order pag nagbilang tayo. So since undefined ang number, we
will call the number x. Para masunod yung consecutiveness of numbers, we will add 1 to the
other value, kaya magiging x+1. For example, let’s say ang value ng x is 5, given that the first
term is just x, that will be 5, and the other one, since ang x natin is 5, it will be 5+1 or 6. You
see? 5 saka 6? They are consecutive. Going back to the original equation, after that, i-square
natin siya since sabi “the square of two consecutive integers.”

Once na ganyan na, let us simplify. ( x )2 is the same as x 2, and for ( x +1) ² , we just use the FOIL
method. Our answer will be x 2+ 2 x +1. Our equation will then become:
2 2
x + x +2 x+ 1=85

Pagsama-samahin na natin yung mga like terms.

2
2 x +2 x+ 1=85

Transpose 85 to the left side para mag-equate siya sa 0.

2 x2 +2 x+ 1−85=0

Simplify.

2 x +2 x−84=0

−b ± √ b −4 ac

Let us use the quadratic equation. Using the formula x= , we will know its roots.
2a
Substitute natin values ng a, b, and c sa equation. a=2 , b=2 , c=−84 yung values ng a, b, and c
natin.

−2 ± √ (2) −4(2)(−84 )
2
x=
2(2)

Multiply each term.

−2 ± √ 4 +672
x=
4

−2 ± √ 676
x=
4
676 is a perfect square. It is a perfect square of 26.

−2 ±26
x=
4

Let’s separate the negative and positive.

−2+26 −2−26
x= ,
4 4

Simplify.

24 −2 8
x= ,
4 4

The numerators and denominators are divisible by 4, so let’s reduce it to the lowest term.

x=6 ,−7

There we have our roots. The roots of the equation are 6 and -7.
