NIGER
Niger on the map
The Origin Of The Name ‘Niger’
The capital is Niamey. The country takes
its name from the Niger River, which flows
through the southwestern part of its
territory. The name Niger derives in turn
from the phrase gher n-gheren, meaning
“river among rivers,” in the Tamashek
language.
how niger was declared as one of the francophonies?
In the late 1890s the French began to colonize
Niger. In 1902, the French built a military fort in
Niamey, a small fishing village at the time.

the colonisers brought up the french

language and the villagers adopted it well.

Niger gained independence on 3rd August

1960

Flag

The flag features a circle in the center, which is

meant to represent independence, as well as the
sun. The tricolor design is also a nod to France, as
Niger was once a colony of France.

The Nigerian flag has three colors: orange, white and green. These three
colors make up the tricolor design similar to the flag of France. The
orange band represents the northern part of the Sahara. It is also
symbolic of the sun. The white band represents purity, although some
people say that is symbolizes the River Niger. Finally, the green band is
symbolic of the fertile areas in southern Niger and it also represents
hope. There is also an orange circle located in the center white band,
which represents both the sun and independence.
