9 Procedure
9.1 Introduction
9.1.1 Used oil is a valuable resource because it has lubrication value and heat value.
9.1.2 When treated to remove contaminants, used oil can be used as a base stock to produce new
lubricating oil.
9.1.3 Because used oil has heat value it can be burned as fuel.
9.1.4. Properly burning the used oil keeps its heat value from being wasted and saves the virgin
heating oil that would be burned instead.
9.2.1 Never dump or dispose of used oil in the trash, in sewers, or on the ground
9.2.2 Make sure collection and storage set-up is leak proof, spill proof, and that tanks
have lids or are covered to prevent water from entering
9.2.3 Use lockable fills to prevent dumping of materials into the tank when it is not supervised.
9.2.4 Maintain our collection containers regularly, comply with local fire and safety regulations, and
avoid leaks and spills.
9.2.5 Post a "Used Oil" sign over each collection drum.
9.2.6 Label storage drums "Used Oil."
9.2.7 Clean up any used oil spills or leaks. This includes providing soak-up material
(e.g. sawdust, kitty litter, or a commercial product) for minor spills. It keeps the
area clean and helps prevent personal injury.
9.3.1 Used oil must be stored in a storage tank and within bund facility which should be constructed
in accordance with Bund Wall Construction & Maintenance procedure: AMC-CEO-ENV-PRO-
0009.
9.3.2 The base of the containment area must be sloped so that any spilled oil may be recollected
and removed.
9.3.3 Never mix used oil with any other material. Ensure that diesel, petrol, solvents, degreasers,
paints, and so on, does not make used oil a hazardous waste for disposal and increasing
collection costs
9.3.4 Carefully record the amount of used oil placed into and removed from storage facilities.
9.3.5 Equip storage containers with wide-mouth, long-necked funnels to reduce spills during filling.
9.3.6 Keep sorbent materials such as kitty litter and sawdust to clean up any spills that occur.
9.3.7 Keep the area near the storage devices neat and clean.
9.4.1 The oil transporter must has an ID number and complies with all relevant used oil
hazardous waste transportation regulations as may required by National Road Traffic Act
(1996), Hazardous Substance Act (1973) and Waste Management procedure, including
keeping tracking records (Manifest) of where the used oil is collected and where it will be
transported to.
9.6.1 Prevent leaks or spills from occurring, and be prepared to respond to spills of used oil.
9.6.2 All employees must follow the hydrocarbon spill cleanup procedure when spillage occurs.

9.6.5 Properly manage the used oil that has been cleaned up. Any leaked or spilled used oil is
managed like a hazardous waste.
9.6.6 Contaminated solid materials generated during the cleanup must be collected and
disposed properly as hazardous waste.
9.7.1 Whenever a mechanic changes the oil in a fleet vehicle, oil filter and maintaining hydraulic
hoses the solid contaminants of the old oil must be kept from contaminating the new oil.
9.7.2 Used oil filters must be drained of oil properly and solid material can be used as scrap waste.
9.7.3 When used oil filters are removed from a warm engine, the mechanic must use gravity
draining method to drain the filter.
9.7.4 Used oil filters must be stored in a covered, rainproof container to prevent used oil from being
washed from the filters to the surrounding environment.
