In Order to Live
A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom
by Yeonmi Park

Autobiography of a refugee from North Korea

Yeonmi Park
Yeonmi Park was born in
Hyesan, North Korea, in
1993, and currently lives
in Seoul, South Korea. She
travels the world as a
human rights activist.
"I am most grateful for two
things: that I was born in
North Korea, and that I
escaped from North Korea."

Yeonmi Park
The book is divided into
3 parts:
1. North Korea
2. China
3. South Korea
Yeonmi talks about his
life in North Korea and
obedience to the
dictatorial leader. She
also talks about the
countless attempts to
flee the country.
At the age of 13, after
her father was sentenced
to forced labor, Yeonmi
and her family made a
desperate decision to
flee North Korea across
the frozen Yalu River to
China, where they fell
into human hands.
After nearly two years in
captivity in a world as
brutal and dangerous as the
one they had left behind,
Yeonmi and her mother
risked their lives again,
traversing the Gobi Desert
and heading for the stars on
their way to freedom.
In Mongolia, they were held in
custody, after which they
received tickets for a flight
to Seoul. Park and her mother
settled in Asan. They had
difficulty adjusting to their
new lives in South Korea, but
they managed to find jobs as
shop assistants and
waitresses.
After that she recovered her lost school
hours and was admitted to Dongguk
University in Seoul.
The author's memoirs
impressed me to tears and
taught me a memorable
lesson: To cherish what I
have, because others do not
even have that much.
Yeonmi Park taught me to
love peace and to fight
for happiness.

This book helped me to value my country more

and also helped me to choose the university
where I want to continue my studies, namely
in my home country.
