*NOTES*

 Burning fossil fuels gives off many gases,

including Sulphur dioxide and various
nitrogen oxides.
 Sulphur dioxide combines with water to form
sulphuric acid. nitrogen oxide combines with
water to form nitric acid. These substances can
help form acid rain.
 Acid rain harms plant that live in the acidic
water and the animals that live in the affected
lakes and river.
 Acid rain also washes mineral salt, such as
calcium and magnesium out of the soil,
reducing the amount available to trees and
other plants.
 Reducing the emissions of the gases that cause
acid rain is expensive, and part of the problem
is that the acid rain often falls a long way from
the place where the gases were produced.
 Photochemical smog is a dangerous type of air
pollution. It is formed when sunlight acts on
car exhaust fumes, producing ozone and other
poisonous pollutants.
 The greenhouse effect is a natural disaster that
keeps the temperature on earth comfortable.
 The burning of fossil fuels, the clearing of
forests by burning, and the increase in the
number of cattle and other animals kept on
farm is increasing the greenhouse effect so the
earth is becoming warmer.
 Deforestation also reduces the amount of
carbon dioxide removed from the air by
photosynthesis.
 Global warming is the gradual change in the
world climate caused by the increased
greenhouse effect.
 Scientist believe that global warming may
change weather patterns, causing droughts and
storms, and even melt the polar ice caps and
glaciers to bring about severe flooding.
