Packaging Materials

Packaging deals with the creation and manufacture of suitable packaging

for the product.

In the consumer market, the packaging is everything when it comes to

selling. Attractive colors, symbols, captions, and logos are used by companies to
influence the purchasing decisions of the customers. Studies show that on an
average a consumer would read only seven words during an entire shopping spree.
Therefore, the sellers have to ensure that the packaging that they choose is
appealing and at the same time, it should also protect the product. Whatever may
be the contents of a consignment basically, packaging plays four basic roles.

 Protection
 Information and aesthetics of the printed material
 Enhance shelf life
 Brand presentation and promotion

Packaging materials used to wrap or protect goods. It is a case, container,

wrapper or other receptacle for packaging goods. It can be made of metals, plastic,
wood, paper, glass, laminates, or polyester.

Various Materials used for Packaging of Clothing and Apparel

Paper and Cardboard

Paper is very popular packaging material. It widely used because it is low
cost, holds its shape, and is easily decorated. Commercially-available paper is
primarily manufactured from pulped wood cellulose fibre, but can also be
manufactured from other sources such as cotton, straw, sisal and hemp. All are
recyclable. Paper cannot pack liquid material. However they provide opportunity
to present article in colourful and attractive way. To some content it can protect
the contents against moisture.
Paper can also be laminated to improve strength or provide barrier
properties. The materials used can be matt or gloss finished or embossed. Other
materials can be laminated onto paperboard e.g. foil or plastics.

Plastic Materials
This is the most popular packaging material, and one of the hardest to
dispose of at the same time. The factors common to all plastics are that they are
light, waterproof, multifunctional, air tight, and strong cheap to manufacture. It
is for these reasons that they are used so often, as an alternative to glass or
paper packaging materials.
They don’t absorb moisture like paper. Best for packaging clothes,
underwear, and goods for travelling. Primarily used for clothes, cosmetics, face
film paper, small jewelry, magazines and other packaging.
Plastics can be used either as individual material or in combination. Their
properties vary widely but usually include lightweight, easily mouldable into
almost limitless shapes, can produce rigid containers or flexible films, can be
impact resistant, directly decorated or labelled, and heat sealable.
Glass Materials
Glass packaging doesn’t just protect its contents; it actually adds value.
The transparency of glass, whether colored or plain, ensures that the product
clearly stand out, allowing buyers to immediately see the quality of the product
concerned.
Commercially-available glass is made from silica, sodium carbonate and
calcium carbonate. Other compounds can be added to provide colour, sparkle or
heat shock resistance.
Glass is a popular and useful packaging material because it is inert,
sterilisable, barrier to moisture and gas, can be moulded into a variety of shapes,
transparent making the product visible, and glass is also highly recyclable.
The most obvious drawback is fragility and the danger of broken glass. The
transparency of glass can be a problem where the product is degraded by light.

Non-woven fabric material

These are a dynamic, value – added alternative to more traditional
materials. Using nonwoven manufacturing, fabrics may be built to adopt an
assortment of characteristics that literally cannot suit certain materials.
Tin and steel cans
These are 100% recyclable, without loss in quality. It offers convenient,
protective packaging for certain products such as clothing and apparel, allowing
for ambient safety. It represents an excellent barrier to water, oxygen, and light.
It is inexpensive.
The major benefit is the ability to trick someone into believing it’s the real
thing when in fact there's a branded T-Shirt, pair of socks or any other garment
inside!
The tins shown include an optional plastic over cap or lid, along with a
stylish ring pull lid.
