Plastic Materials
This is the most popular packaging material, and one of the hardest to
dispose of at the same time. The factors common to all plastics are that they are
light, waterproof, multifunctional, air tight, and strong cheap to manufacture. It
is for these reasons that they are used so often, as an alternative to glass or
paper packaging materials.
They don’t absorb moisture like paper. Best for packaging clothes,
underwear, and goods for travelling. Primarily used for clothes, cosmetics, face
film paper, small jewelry, magazines and other packaging.
Plastics can be used either as individual material or in combination. Their
properties vary widely but usually include lightweight, easily mouldable into
almost limitless shapes, can produce rigid containers or flexible films, can be
impact resistant, directly decorated or labelled, and heat sealable.
Glass Materials
Glass packaging doesn’t just protect its contents; it actually adds value.
The transparency of glass, whether colored or plain, ensures that the product
clearly stand out, allowing buyers to immediately see the quality of the product
concerned.
Commercially-available glass is made from silica, sodium carbonate and
calcium carbonate. Other compounds can be added to provide colour, sparkle or
heat shock resistance.
Glass is a popular and useful packaging material because it is inert,
sterilisable, barrier to moisture and gas, can be moulded into a variety of shapes,
transparent making the product visible, and glass is also highly recyclable.
The most obvious drawback is fragility and the danger of broken glass. The
transparency of glass can be a problem where the product is degraded by light.
