Translation Strategies (Procedures)

A translation procedure is a translation strategy used to render
sentences or smaller linguistic units.

In his overview of the different types of translation procedures with
which translation theorists are concerned, Newmark lists the
following translation procedures:

1) Transcription, Borrowing, Loan Translation, Calque:

Transcription or transliteration is a term generally used to refer to
“letter-by letter- rendering of a SL name or a word in the TL when
the two languages have distinct scripts. In other words, it is a “type of
interlingual transfer in which the forms of the original (e.g. sounds,
letters or words) are preserved unchanged in TT”.

Transliteration is considered as one of two extremes of interlingual
translation. The other extreme is the free rendering of the source text
or the “free text production”. Between these two extremes lie all the
other types of translation.

Unless there is an acceptable translation in the TL, the use of
transcription becomes obligatory in a number of cases which
Newmark list as follows:

a. proper names - particularly names of people…;
b. addresses;
c. names of private firms;
d. names of national public and private institutions, unless they are
transparent;
e. terms peculiar to the institutions and general culture of the SL
countries, where there are no equivalents in the RL countries;
f. titles of newspapers, periodicals, books, plays…[etc.]
Newmark argues that transcription or transliteration is particularly
common in the translation of cultural words in general, and in the
translation of cultural words used in regional novels and essays in
particular for two reasons: to preserve the cultural color of the original
text in the translation; and to create kind of intimacy between the
target reader and the text.

Transcription is a form of borrowing. The translator borrows the

original word if translating it will not convey its meaning.

Newmark continues to argue that the translator’s mission is not to
mystify, but is rather to explain the unfamiliar. Therefore,
transference is usually used with another translation procedure
(functional equivalent, cultural equivalent, etc.) or glosses in which the
transferred word is defined and explained.

Borrowing words through transferring them into the target language
has enriched the vocabulary of many languages. Katamba argues that
borrowing has two forms which are loanwords and loanshifts.

Katamba describes a loanword as “a word belonging to one language
which is imported or adopted by another”. He explains that a loanshift
“involves taking on board the meaning represented by a word in a
foreign language, but not the word-form itself”. Katamba adds that
loanshifts are also called calques or loan translations.

‫‪2) One-to-one translation:‬‬

‫‪This procedure involves substituting the SL terms with their direct‬‬
‫‪equivalents in the TL, in other words, the translator substitutes the‬‬
‫‪word with its most common equivalent that could be found in a‬‬
‫‪bilingual dictionary.‬‬
