Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students will create a wanted poster of a key figure during the Civil War. They will be asked to identify what
crimes this individual is wanted for, who they are wanted by, if they are wanted dead or alive or just alive,
and what their reward is. This activity will allow students to be expressive in their learning of the Civil War,
showcasing their recently acquired knowledge in a creative way. This tool helps enhance their learning as it
assigns a fun activity to their learning, rather than taking notes or watching a video.
Lesson idea implementation

Teachers will introduce the assignment to the class. There are many options of individuals you may choose,
including political leaders, generals, or other notable figures during the Civil War. There is one catch: you
must report who you’re choosing to me the teacher. There can be no more than 3 students doing a poster for
the same person, to prevent repetition. This project will be introduced with license to be as creative as you
would like. You can create an image for your wanted poster or find a suitable image of your wanted person
online. The background and design for your wanted poster is completely up to you (as long as you follow
directions of what to put on it). Students will be assessed on the accuracy, presentation, and creativity of their
assignment. They will be given 2 full class periods to work on their wanted posters and will give a 3-5 minute
presentation on the third day.

The final product will be used to inform/differentiate learning by having students showcase their differences
in creation during their presentation. They will be learning from each other, as while most students will have
different Civil War figures, they will be given many presentations on figures they did not work on. Students
will be required to take at least 3 notes on each historical figure they did not do a presentation for (not
graded). Students will then receive feedback on their presentations and posters accordingly.

Reflective Practice:

This activity could have a great impact on student learning. Their ability to be creative and show their
understanding of the topic in their own unique way is vital for their success. Students should always be given
the opportunity to express themselves and this assignment is a great way of doing so. To further extend the
lesson, students could be asked to write a couple paragraphs of the importance of their wanted person’s
capture. What purpose does their reason to be wanted serve? How important is it for their person to be
caught or killed? Why does the continued freedom of this person affect the outcome of the Civil War?
