A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Skimming

October 07, 2022

I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard
The students demonstrate an understanding that:
 skimming will help him/her locate the information quickly while
ensuring that they utilize their time wisely. It is also a useful strategy for
their reading activities, such as increasing their interest, saving time,
locating the main idea, and predicting the text's content.

B. Performance Standards
At the end of the period, the students are expected to:
 learn how to skim
 skim through the information needed to answer the questions
C. Learning Competencies/Objectives
EN8RC-If-7:
Use the appropriate reading style (scanning, skimming, speed reading, intensive
reading etc.) for one’s purpose.
The learners:
- answer the questions by skimming the provided text material for
information.
II. CONTENT
Skimming – Skim through the information using various materials

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

1. Multimedia presentations powered by Canva and YouTube media

applications
2. Learner’s material – printed copies of table of contents and travel brochure
(as part of the activity)

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminaries
House Rules/Classroom routine:
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of attendance

B. Review of the previous lesson

The teacher will set the tone for the class by asking open-ended
questions designed to elicit thinking on previously covered content. The
teacher will ask about the last lesson, which was about graphic
organizers, especially story map. For this quick review, a brief activity
will be presented, encouraging students to participate and interact in
order to recall the previously discussed material.
The teacher may pose questions such as:
1. What was the topic of our last lesson?
2. What was the last word of the day that was introduced to you?

C. Motivation
The teacher will establish the starting point of the lesson by asking the
students how they readily and quickly identify the book that answers
their needs. The teacher will next use a PowerPoint presentation to
introduce the short story of "Jabu and the Lion," instructing students to
read it silently. Following that, the teacher will assign students in groups
of three to generate ideas based on what they've learned to answer
questions regarding the read text.

Task 1: Skim through this shortened story and answer the questions that follow.

Jabu and the Lion

Jabu is a young Zulu cowherd who happens to love his
job-taking care of his father's cattle. In fact, no one else in his
village is as tactful and hard-working as he is.

One fine day, when Bhubesi, the lion who has been causing havoc in the
village gets caught in a trap, Jabu frees him even though instinct warns him not to.
And soon he realizes that an act of kindness need not always be repaid in kind.

1. What is the title of the paragraph or story?

2. Does it have a subheading or subtitle?
3. Who/what is it referring to?
4. What does the last sentence implies?
5. What is the story “Jabu and the Lion” all about?

D. Presenting the new lesson

The teacher will inform students that the previous activity is related to
today's lesson. The teacher will demonstrate and define the term
"Skimming," and then ask students questions such as, "Do you know what
skimming is?" The teacher will explain to the students that skimming is a
reading technique or style. The teacher will explain it, provide some
examples of reading situations, and discuss various skimming techniques.

Activity
Students will be asked to study the sample table of contents from the
book, Africa in World History: from Prehistory to the Present. The
teacher will instruct the students to work individually and prepare ½
crosswise.

Task 2: Study the sample table of contents excerpted from the book, Africa in
World History: from Prehistory to the Present.
Note the division of the major ideas.
TABLE OF CONTENTS

Introduction i
PART I Africa up to 1500 C. E. 1
MASTER TIMELINE: AFRICA UP TO 1500 C. E. 2
Chapter 1 Africa and Human Origins 4
Analysis
The teacher will ask the students to answer the questions for the table of
contents presented to them in a ½ crosswise paper.
Answer the following questions:
1. What are the three main topics covered in the table of contents?
2. What does the title of Part 1 suggest?
3. Which table of contents chapter explores the culture of politics and
religion?
4. Which section of the table of contents that talks about the African
environment and its challenges?
5. Give the title of the chapter that discusses Africa and human origins.
Abstraction
The teacher will question the students about skimming once more in
order to ensure that they understood the lesson. The teacher will again ask what
skimming is and how to skim.
 Skimming is a reading technique designed to locate the main or
general idea of the text without going into detailed reading.
 To skim means to look at the book quickly to take in the general
subject, the divisions and the major headings.

Techniques that will help when you skim:

 Move your eyes across the lines rapidly.
 Don’t stop. Always look forward; do not look back.
 Strictly focus on key words.
 Usually, the first sentence prepares the reader for the paragraph.

Application
The teacher will then ask the students how they feel about their activity,
whether or not finding the answers to the questions was simple and easy,
and what they did to find the answers.
V. Evaluation
The teacher will assess the students' knowledge and understanding by
having them answer multiple choice questions using a different material
that offers information useful for skimming, which is an African travel
brochure.

To answer the questions, use the information from the Africa travel brochure.
Write the letter of your choice at the back portion of your ½ crosswise.
