No food or liquids (this includes water) minimally 6 hours prior

to the procedure.
Consult with the physician regarding medication restrictions
(especially aspirin, and other anti-inflammatory products) and
preliminary blood tests.
Take other daily medications unless otherwise instructed by the
physician.
Let the patient plan to take the day off from work.
AFTER THE PROCEDURE
LIVER BIOPSY

Transported to a recovery room where you will be observed

for approximately three hours. This is to be sure that
everything is fine before you the patient goes home.
The patient will be provided with written discharge
instructions.
The patient may expect some soreness at the incision site.

Diagnose liver disease and the stage it is at

Evaluation of a mass seen on an imaging test
Detect cancer and infections
Provide reasons for liver swelling or abnormal levels of liver
enzymes
Monitoring the liver following a liver transplant.

Pain after the procedure
Bleeding, which is rare in people with cancer (0.57%), and rarer
in those without cancer (0.16%)
