Lesson 9 The Principles of Prayer
Lesson 9 The Principles of Prayer
Presentation:
A. Pre-session
Let the students memorize and recite Matt 7:7.
B. Motivation
Prayer is one of the basics in Christian life. One of the first things that a Christian
needs to learn is praying. A Christian may not readily win souls. He may now readily
read his Bible maybe because as a new Christian he does not have one yet. But the
one thing that he can readily do is pray.
Prayer is important. No Christian can grow in his Christian life without prayer.
During Charles Spurgeon’s time, before preachers start their preaching it was normal
that the preacher will pray for at least 10 minutes. How neglectful are the Christians
today with regards to prayer. Many goes to school without even spending a minute
in prayer. Many rushes to the office without whispering a prayer. This is a very sad
truth.
Jesus Christ, during His earthly ministry, prayed. He oftentimes prayed alone. We
most of the time pray with a group but Jesus prayed alone.
Lu 9:8, “And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with
him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?”
In the morning. Mr 1:35, “And in the morning, rising up a great while before
day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.”
In the middle of the day. Lu 5:15, “But so much the more went there a fame
abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by
him of their infirmities. (16) And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and
prayed.”

At night. Mr 6:46, “And when he had sent them away, he departed into a
mountain to pray. 47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the
sea, and he alone on the land.”
All night prayer. Lu 6:12, “And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into
a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.”
At the Garden of Gethsemane before His crucifixion. Lu 22:41, “And he was
withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, (42)
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will,
but thine, be done.”
If Jesus, the Son of God, the God Man, prayed to God how much more us which are
mere mortals and weak. Let us learn to pray.
C. Lesson Proper
Introduction:
Today, we are going to talk about the Principles for Prayer. There are certain
questions that we need to answer.
I. What is Prayer?
Prayer is communion with God. It is the means by which we talk to God.
Illus. There was a certain lady who received a call from someone. She
failed to answer the phone because the phone was not in her reach. As
she watched the television, she learned that it was Tom Cruise who was
calling her. She was so much dismayed for the failed opportunity of
talking with the person of whom she admired so much.
There are Christians who are more interested with talking to a special
person. Sometimes we spend long hours talking with a friend but we miss
the greatest privilege of talking with the most special person in the universe,
God.
Prayer is the only way to talk with God. We cannot reach God in any other
form.
Ge 4:26, “And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called
his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the
LORD.”
The only persons in this world that can talk with God are His children.
Lu 11:2, “And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father …”
You may ask me, “Sir, will God never hear the prayer of the unbelievers
ever?” There is only one prayer that God will hear and answer in their
prayers, the prayer of acceptance.
Ro 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved.”
That is the reason why the prayers of the pope are powerless. The prayers
of the Muslims are powerless. The prayers of the cults are powerless. It is
only the prayers of the Christians that God will hear and answer.
It is God’s desire that His children always talk with Him. God wants
to hear us. He wants us to express our feelings. He wants us to
hear our petitions and requests. He simply wants us to talk with
Him.
Pr 15:29, “The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the
prayer of the righteous.”
Groceries.
When I had a knee operation, tatay bought me a
bicycle.
Don’t you think that my parents are happy because they are
meeting the needs of their child? Of course they are.
D. Conclusion
Let us understand that God wants His children to pray. Let us not miss the
opportunity to talk with a real, loving and generous God. God will hear and answer
our prayers.
