Climate change is likely causing parts of the water cycle to speed up as warming global temperatures increase
the rate of evaporation worldwide. More evaporation is causing more precipitation, on average. Since the warm air
can hold more water vapor, the resulting precipitation will be much more intense, which can result in more
powerful rainstorms that cause severe issues like excessive floods in coastal cities all over the world. However,
things don't stop there. While some regions are experiencing greater storms, others are facing more dry air and
even drought. As previously explained, when temperature increases, evaporation rises and soils dry out. When it
does rain, most of the water flows off the hard ground into rivers and streams, leaving the soil dry. As a result,
there still more evaporation from the soil and an increased risk of drought.
Climate change can affect the intensity and frequency of precipitation. Warmer oceans increase the amount
of water that evaporates into the air. When more moisture-laden air moves over land or converges into a storm
system, it can produce more intense precipitation for example, heavier rain and snow storms. Heavy precipitation
does not necessarily mean the total amount of precipitation at a location has increased just that precipitation is
occurring in more intense events. The total amount of precipitation, however, can also fluctuate if there are
variations in both the interval between precipitation events and the intensity of the precipitation.
