4. THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN ANIMATION
Lesson 1: History of animation
1. EARLY WAYS OF SHOWING MOTION
(30,000 BC – 1500 AD)
● SHAHR-E SUKHTEH(3000 BC) - A bronze-age
pottery bowl depicts goats leaping (Shahr-e
Sukhteh, Iran).
● VITRUVIAN MAN(1500 AD) - Leonardo da
Vinci’s Vitruvian Man drawing shows multiple
angles, implying movement.
2. ANIMATION BEFORE FILM
(1600-1877)
● MAGIC LANTERN(1603) - an image projector
using pictures on sheets of glass. Since some
sheets contain moving parts, it is considered the
first example of projected animation.
● THAUMATROPE(1824) - housed a rotating
mechanism with a different picture on each
side. When rotated, you saw a combined picture
“persistence of vision”.
● PHENAKITO SCOPE(1831) - It features spinning
disks reflected in mirrors that made it seem like
the pictures were moving.
● ZOETROPE(1834) - A hollow drum that housed
images on Long interchangeable strips that spin
and make the images appear to move.
● FLIP-BOOK(1868) - also known as the
kineograph, reached a wide audience and is
credited with inspiring early animators more
than the machines developed in this era.
● PRAXINOSCOPE(1877) - The praxinoscope
expanded on the zoetrope, using multiple
wheels to rotate images. It is considered to have
shown the first prototypes of the animated
cartoon.
3. THE SILENT ERA(1900-1930)
● HUMOROUS PHASES OF FUNNY FACES(1906) -
marks the first entirely animated film, using
Stop-motion photography to create action.
● GERTIE THE DINOSAUR - is considered the first
cartoon to feature an appealing character.
● FELIX THE CAT(1919) - Musical Mews and Feline
Follies introduced Felix the Cat—often
considered the first animated movie star.
● STEAMBOAT WILLIE(1928) - featuring Mickey
Mouse—becomes the first cartoon with the
sound printed on the film, and is the first
notable success for Walt Disney Studios,
founded in Los Angeles in 1923.

● Merrie melodies(1930) - Warner Brothers
Cartoons founded, created the Merrie Melodies
series starring Bugs Bunny.
● Snow White(1937) - Walt Disney releases Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first animated
feature to use hand-drawn animation.
5. The American Television Era
● Flintstones(1960) - Hanna-Barbera releases The
Flintstones, the first animated series on
prime-time
● Yogi bear(1961) - The Yogi Bear Show, a spin-off
of Huckleberry Hound (another Hanna-Barbera
production), debuts on national TV.
● ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIAN(1961) -
This one's on the animation Timeline because it
was the first full Feature animated film Disney
made
● THE PINK PHINK(1964) - Wins the Academy
Award for Best Short Film for The Pink Phink (of
the Pink Panther series)
● FRITZ THE CAT(1964) - Fritz the Cat is
released—the first animated adult (X-rated)
feature film.
6. GOLDEN AGE OF CGI
● THE ADVENTURES OF ANDRE & WALLY B (1984)
This short film was the first fully CGI-animated
film, created by The Graphics Group, the
precursor to Pixar.
● THE SIMPSONS (1987) - It is the longest-running
American sitcom, the longest-running American
animated program, and in 2009 it surpassed
Gunsmoke as the longest-running American
scripted primetime.
● TOY STORY (1995) - Toy Story, the first fully
computer-animated feature film, was released.
● LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS 2002 -
Gollum was the first real character that showed
the world what motion capture and CGI was
capable of. A fully computer generated
character could appear alongside actors and it
looked amazing.
● AVATAR (2009) - James Cameron’s Avatar
featuring real actors in completely computer
generated Worlds Avatar blew audiences away
with its advanced CGI and motion capture
techniques, bringing the lush, alien world of
Pandora to life in both 2 and 3 dimensions.
● BIG HERO 6 (2014) - Big Hero 6 is the first
Disney animated film to feature Marvel Comics
characters

final film. These are broken down into sequences,
scenes and/or shots.

the same length as the final film so it can be a useful
guide

sound effects. The actors will read the lines from the
script and record their dialogue. These voices will be
used later on for the animatic, the animation and the

PRODUCTION
Layout - Shows the visual workings of the shot and the
precise framing of the camera

Background - It is composed of scenery, buildings,

characters and props

In-Between - It is composed of scenery, buildings,

characters and props

Clean-Up - This is where rough drawings are

traced to make the final drawings.
