1.What is the role of the Baby Friendly Initiative?

3.If a mother asked which formula milk was like her breast milk, how would you answer?

4.You are doing the routine baby check on a well-grown term infant who is 20 hours old.
He appears well and you have no concerns. His mother asks you whether she should give
him some formula as she doesn’t think she has any milk and he has only had one wet
nappy. What would you tell her?

5.You are called to the delivery of a term infant because there is meconium stained liqour.
The infant is born in good condition and cries vigorously. He is given to you on the resusci-
taire but requires no intervention. His mother is keen to breast feed. What should happen
next?

6.You are talking to the mother of a 30 week infant who is on the NICU and is now 16
hours old. She states that she wants to formula feed her infant. What information do you
think she needs to be given in order to make an informed choice? What would be your rec-
ommendation to her?

7.After a long discussion she decides that she will express for her infant. She asks when
she should start and how often she should be expressing. What would you tell her or who
would you ask to speak to her?

8.On routine review an infant is found to be jaundiced above the phototherapy line on day
2 of life. DCT is negative and there is no sign of haemolysis or sepsis. She is exclusively
breast fed and is her mother’s first baby. How would you manage her feeds whilst she re-
quires phototherapy? What factors might make you reassess your feeding plan?

9.You are asked to review an infant of a diabetic mother who was born at 38 weeks weigh-
ing 4.1kg. He is being breast fed and his first pre-feed sugar is 1.7. What would be your
feeding plan?

10. He is given another feed and his next pre-feed sugar is 2.1. He is well with no signs of
neuroglycopaenia. What would you suggest?

11.A term infant was 3.4 kg at birth and is weighed on day 3 as there have been concerns
over feeding and is now 3.03kg. He has been breast feeding exclusively every four hours
and his mother is proud of her feeding routine. What information would you like to know?
What is your management plan?

12.What guidelines are there which may be helpful when dealing with feeding issues on
the postnatal wards?
