1. What Is Art to me?

Art for me has a language of its own. Art allows people from different culture, races, and
different times to communicate with each other via story, sounds, sculpture, and images. I use art in
my daily lives, just like right now, when I randomly play music from my song list, even though I am
not sad I could actually relate to the lyrics and emotions of the song.   Art connects us. It is powerful
for it can potentially influence our culture, politics, and even economy. It influences society by
changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across space and time. Through art,
I do believe that we can achieve a better understanding of past which helps us develop a better
understanding of the present-day.

1. Activity #

Observe Francisco Goya’s “The third of May 1808”. Compare and contrast the work with
Juan Luna’s “Spoliarium”. Note don’t mind the historical context of the work yet. Just try to
observe each one and discuss the possible interpretations of the paintings. Try to think of all the
factors involved in creating it and list down parallelisms you can find. (attached the pictures of
Goya and Luna)

ANALYSIS:

1. Answer these questions and write down your answer:

a. What kind of event is being portrayed in the painting?  What emotion/ are the artist
trying to evoke for what reason
A. Goya’s “The Third of May 1808”

I think the event being portrayed in the painting is execution, since there is a clear picture of
a gun, blood, dead bodies, and civilian being scared and hopeful. I think the artist is trying to show
us or let us feel how unfair the justice system even before. The center figure is very eye-catching
seems like there is heroism happening even back then. He actually looks like Jesus Christ, through
his hand gesture plus the fact that he is wearing white polo, looks like the painting is all about him. I
actually believe that those men with gun have a position in a society, that they are supported with
the government for they can freely kill people who used to against them.
