No one can deny the fact that commuting by bicycle is eco-friendly for the

environment compared to other kinds of vehicles. However, it is not considered to

be the main mean of transportation in some countries. The following essay will
examine the causes as well as the solutions related to this tendency.

There are three main reasons why cycling is not popular. To begin with, bicycles
do not satisfy the traveling demand of people in the modern life because it just
moves within a distance of 5 km and can not able to carry the heavy goods.
Therefore, they tend to use other types of vehicles that are convenient and fast such
as motorbikes or cars. Another important factor contributing to this issue is that
cycling is dangerous because of the busy road. Although many elders and children
travel by bike, there are no lanes for bicyclists. This may lead to many accidents
which are difficult to control. The last underlying factor is that journeys by bicycle
require physical fitness. For example, going up hills or being stuck in the traffic
congestion discourage people from choosing this type of transport, especially in
bad weather or on sunny summer days.

What is needed to combat this problem is definite action. The most obvious

solution is rising citizens' awareness of the gas emissions from motorbikes and cars
that harms the environment. As a result, people are encouraged to cycle in order
not to live in a polluted world. A further step could be spending public money to
provide free bicycles. By doing this many low-income people could easily use
bicycles to travel. The final solution is to upgrade the infrastructure. For example,
more lanes are built to serve cyclists and CCTV is installed to monitor who break
the traffic laws so it is safer and faster for people travel by bike.

In conclusion, while there are evident reasons that bring about this phenomenon, I
believe that great efforts from the government and residents are necessary to
reverse the trend.
