    “CAPTAIN FANTASTIC”

    CAPTAIN FANTASTIC

    Captain Fantastic is a very unconventional movie in my opinion, it


    basically revolves around the story of a family of six children and a father
    who live in a very different way from the rest of the world away in a
    forest.

    The movie starts off with one of the kids (Bo) killing a deer and that is
    when the father deems Bo as “a man” and marks the end of his
    boyhood. Their daily routines include physical training such as rock
    climbing and hunting, mental training such as homeschooling, and
    leisure time spent around the campfire listening to music.

    As an extension of the story their mom “Leslie” was going through


    bipolar disorder and was sent to a hospital near her mom’s house in the
    states, they suddenly come to know that their mom killed herself and all
    of them are in a state of sorrow but they somehow gather the courage
    and decide to go to the states to fulfil Leslie’s last wishes which was to
    be cremated and her last rites should be joyful, this is where they learn
    their differences from the rest of the world.

    The movie sends a strong message that we as a society have bound


    ourselves with so many rules, so many rights and wrongs that anything
    outside of that is termed as “wild” or uncivilized. It was clearly seen in
    the part where they all show up in poppy colors of clothes dressed as a
    hippie in Leslie’s funeral and were thrown out.

    It also talks about the hatred towards the culture of consumerism, about
    how people are obsessed with buying things and turn it into an addiction.
    Another point that I found was the dominance of capitalism, concepts
    like Trotskyism and Stalinism were discussed in the movie.

    There was a small legal aspect found in the movie wherein the
    grandfather wanted to keep custody of the grandchild- Rellian and
    blackmailed the father on the basis of the scratches on his body
    because of training.
