Criteria for Screening

(1) Reversal or improvement of clinical conditions that prompted IMV Yes

(2) Ability to initiate spontaneous breaths Yes

(3) PaO2/FiO2 ratio > 200

(4) Respiratory rate ≤ 30-35

(5) PEEP ≤ 5-8 cm H2O

(6) Mental status Awake, oriented

(7) Hemodynamic stability HR ≤ 110/min and either off or on low-dose VP agents

PEEP = positive end-expiratory pressure; HR = heart rate; VP = vasopressor.
