BIOGRAFI Muslim of Saintis

Ibnu Al Nafis

His full name is Ala al-Din Abu al-Hassan Ali bin Abi-Hazm
al-Qarshi al-Dimashqi, and he is commonly referred to as Ibn
al-Nafis. He was born in Damascus in 1213. He memorized
the Quran, learned to read and write, and studied
jurisprudence, Hadith and Arabic.

Later, he directed his efforts to study medicine and his teacher


was Muhaththab Ad-Deen ʻAbdur-Raheem` Ali who was
known as Ad-Dikhwaar. At the age of 23, he moved to Cairo
where he worked first at the Al-Nassri Hospital and later at
the Al-Mansouri Hospital, where he was chief physician.

When he was 29 years old, he published his most important


work, The Commentary on Anatomy at Canon Avicenna,
which included his views on pulmonary and cardiac
circulation.
He also wrote a book called, The Comprehensive Book of
Medicine. This book was the largest medical encyclopedia
that had to be tried at the time and is still being consulted by
scientists.

Ibn al-Nafis is an orthodox Sunni Muslim and wrote


extensively in fields outside of medicine, including law,
theology, philosophy, sociology and astronomy. He also wrote
one of the first Arabic novels which was translated as
Theologus Autodidactus.
He is a highly educated and multi-talented scientist, and a
pioneer in medicine. Through his research and discoveries, he
succeeded in surpassing contemporary scientists. He, himself,
managed to write the largest medical encyclopedia in history.
