Task 1:

The line graph demonstrates changes in the percentage of residents being born and passing away in New
Zealand in a 2000-year-period starting from 1901.

Overall, there was a rise in both birth and death rate, with a faster pace for the former and a more
steady pace for the latter in the first half of the period. In the later part of this period, the birth rate is
forecasted to decrease steadily whilst the death rate is predicted to continue to climb.

At the start of this period, the proportion of New Zealand people who were born increased significantly
from 20,000 and reached a peak of around 65,000 in 1961. From 1961 to 2001, the graph records a
fluctuation in the figure between 65,000 and 50,000, then it is expected that there will be a downward
trend to roughly 45,000 births by the end of the period.

Turning to the death rate, as can be seen from the line graph, it started below 10,000 and soared
gradually to under 30,000 in 2001, with minor / insignificant fluctuations during the period. This trend is
anticipated to be more rapid between 2001 and 2061 , after which the rate is likely to level off at
approximately 60,000.
