IT'S ALL ABOUT
Quantitative estimates of sediment flux and the global
cycling of sediments from hillslopes to rivers,
estuaries, deltas, continental shelves, and deep-sea
basins have a long research tradition. In this context,
extremely large and commensurately rare sediment
transport events have so far eluded a systematic
analysis.

Review some of the highest reported sediment yields

SEDIMENT YIELDS FOLLOWING VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS

Explosive volcanic eruptions produce

highly erodible pyroclastic deposits
that mantle volcanic flanks and may
blanket or even obliter-ate river
valleys (Lavigne and Thouret, 2002;
Major, 2004; Gran and Montgomery, Volcanic Eruption
2005; Manville et al., 2005; Carrivick
et al., 2010).
REGIONAL
LANDSLIDE EPISODES
Earthquakes, rainstorms, and snow-
melt events trigger regional-scale
mass wasting episodes entailing
between tens and tens of thousands
of landslides (Crozier, 2005),
creating excess sediment to be
flushed through the drainage

network.
FAILURE OF NATURAL DAMS

Catastrophic outburst floods and

debris flows following the sudden
failure of landslide, ice, glacier,
and volcanogenic dams
significantly modulate sediment
transport in mountain rivers
Natural dam
(Korup and Tweed, 2007; O'Connor,
and Beebee, 2009; Manville, 2010).
EXTREME SEDIMENT TRANSPORT BY
GIANT MASS MOVEMENTS

GIANT TERRESTRIAL MASS MOVEMENTS

Terrestrial mass movements (i.e. cliff

collapses, soil creeps, mudflows,
landslides etc.) are severe forms of
natural disasters mostly occurring in
mountainous terrain, which is subjected
to specific geological, geomorphological
Terrestrial movement
and climatological conditions, as well
as to human activities

due to their destructive and tsunami-
generation potential. How mass
movements could occur, and what
role these events play in continental-
slope evolution.
