Infinitive and Gerund

A. Infinitive

1. If the verb is followed by another verb, the second verb is usually the to-infinitive.

Verb + to + infinitive

Ex: I can’t afford to buy a new car

In the negative, not comes before the infinitive.

Ex: she pretends not to hear what I’m saying.

Here are some verbs followed by infinitives:

Afford choose expect hope offer promise

Agree dare` fail learn plan refuse

Arrange decide guarantee long prepare threaten

Appear demand hesitate manage pretend wish

Attempt deserve know how would like seem

2. After the verbs below, we normally use an object before the to-infinitive

Advise beg encourage instruct persuade require

Allow cause forbid invite recommend teach

Ask command force order remind tell

Authorize compel intend permit request warn

Appoint convince urge would like want need

Ex: We invited her to have dinner with us. He warned you not to be late again.

B. Gerunds

A gerund is a verb that functions like a noun

Verb + Verb with ing

1. Gerunds are used as the objects of certain verbs.


Ex: I enjoy going to Sihanouk Ville.

Here are some verbs followed by gerunds.

Admit consider deny finish imagine

Avoid enjoy dislike give up involve

Appreciate delay feel like(want) practice keep on

Mind miss postpone risk suggest

Discuss keep quit put off resent

2. Gerunds are used as the object of prepositions.

Verb + preposition + verb with ing.

Ex: Are you tired of hearing complaints?

Ex: We are good at planning ahead.

Here are some common prepositions combination followed by gerunds.

Be excited about doing it keep (s.o) from doing it be accused of doing it

Be worried about ……… prevent (s.o) from…… be capable of…………

Complain about ……… prohibit (s.o) from…… be guilty of……………

Dream about…………… stop (s.o) from…… take advantage of….

Talk about……. Believe in doing it be tired of…….

Think about….. be interested in ………

Participate in ………. Insist on doing it

Succeed in ………..

Apologize to (s.o) for doing it be accustomed to doing it

Blame (s.o) for doing it be committed to doing it

Be responsible for doing it look forward to doing it
