1 Getting started 10
MAT provides a comprehensive package of features for the user:
l Fleet list and fleet map gives you instant access to data on your entire fleet
l Interactive street, terrain and satellite maps, plus C-Map marine charts
l Full technical and customer support from Pole Star or your distributor
Marine Asset Tracker 2.0 is powered by Pole Star's reliable and powerful asset tracking platform, Purplefinder.
By going on to the Purplefinder website (www.purplefinder.com) and logging in with your username and pass-
word, you and other designated users can access data relating to your fleet via your desktop, laptop, tablet or
smartphone. All you need is access to the web.
To avoid notifications and alerts from MAT being blocked or filtered by your email provider, please add
“@Purplefinder.com” and “@Purplefinder.net” to your safe senders list. If you need support or assistance,
please speak to your IT department.
This user guide should help you answer any common questions - however, if you have any other queries or prob-
lems, please contact Pole Star Customer Support or your Pole Star distributor (See "Get in touch" on page 108).

Fleet list 2.2
The fleet list gives you an overview of your fleet's situ-
ation at a glance. Your fleet's latest position report data is
displayed alongside a thumbnail map of each ship's loc-
ation.
The Fleet list provides you with a lot of information about your fleet at a glance.
Thumbnail Map
The thumbnail map shows the location of the vessel (at the time it sent its latest position report).
The information on the position report comes from three different sources: the user, the satellite transceiver and
Purplefinder.

Warning position reports
MAT1, MAT3 and MAT5 will automatically transmit a warning position report if there is a power or mechanical
problem with the unit.
l Set up warning position report notifications to receive the battery report automatically in your inbox. (See
"Add notifications" on page 46).
l In the Position Report History report. (See "Position report history" on page 58).
The messages vary depending upon whether it is a MAT1, MAT3 and MAT5 transceiver, as shown in the fol-
lowing tables:
MAT1 warnings
Warning message Description What it means
Voltage: xx volts Critical voltage has fallen below 9V. Check power supply
For MAT1, the voltage line in the APR will usually read “At least voltage: 10.8”. If the critical voltage falls
below 9V, the next position report transmitted will be a WPR and the voltage line will give the current
voltage reading. When the critical voltage reaches its usual level, the next position report will be an APR
with the voltage line “At least voltage: 10.8”.
MAT3 warnings
Warning message Description What it means
Voltage: < 13 V Critical voltage has fallen below pre-set critical level. Replace power pack
The voltage line in the APR will usually read “14 V” for MAT3. If the critical voltage falls below 13 V, the
next position report transmitted will be a WPR and the voltage line will read “< 13 V”. The voltage will now
reduce rapidly. You are advised to replace the power pack immediately.

Amver notifications
Amver (Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue) is a voluntary global ship reporting system used world-
wide by search and rescue authorities to arrange for assistance from participating merchant vessels to persons
in distress at sea. The Amver notifications tool enables you to automatically forward position reports from a ves-
sel or vessels in your fleet to Amver at no extra cost. By using this automated system, you remove the need for
the ship to manually send sailing plans and position reports to Amver, thus saving time and money on com-
munications. For more information on Amver, go to www.amver.com.

Credit statement
Whether you have a vessel account or a fleet account, you will be notified when you are approaching your critical
credit quantity (100 credits per vessel) and need to order more credits . However, you are advised to monitor
usage of credits across the fleet and be aware when the number remaining is running low in your account(s).
The credit statement gives a summary of the credit quantity remaining for the individual vessel or the entire fleet,
depending upon which type of account you have set up, as shown below.
This report shows how the credits were used by each vessel for the period specified.
2 About 34
Credit usage summary
This report shows the total number of credits used by each vessel for a specific period.
Tip: To monitor your credit usage, you may wish to analyse the data by incorporating custom fields into the
report. (See "Manage custom fields" on page 99).
Custom fields
To monitor your credit usage more closely, you can create custom fields so that you can analyze usage by, for
example, Office, Owner, Cost Centre or Purchase Order Number. Once created, your custom fields will appear
as additional columns in the Credit usage summary (See "Manage custom fields" on page 99), which you can
then download to Excel for further analysis.

It is also important for mobile telephone numbers that have been transferred between operators, as they may not
be deliverable without intervention from your SMS service provider. Messages are routed according to the coun-
try code and the network prefix. For example, country code 44 and network prefix 7986 will be routed to the Virgin
network in the UK. If this number is transferred to another UK network operator such as Vodafone then problems
in SMS transmission may occur.

Manage users
You can create up to 10 additional standard logins and associate vessels or groups of vessels to them directly in
your Master login. This is useful if you have a large fleet and want colleagues to have access to the specific
groups of vessels for which they are responsible. It is also useful if there is a third party to whom you wish to
have limited access.
For each standard login, you can include all three authorization levels according to the level of password you
want to give each user: Master, Assistant, View (See "Password comparison matrix" on page 16).
You may want to make a note of the password you enter as it will not appear at any further stage.
2. Click on CREATE.
Please note: If you require different levels of access for this username, you can create Assistant and View
passwords for it. However, to do this you will have to leave the login you are currently in, so you are
advised to add vessels to this login first. (See "Add a new login" on page 90).
3 Tasks 90
Add a vessel to a login
Username Enter the username (of the user to whom you wish to give access to the vessel).
Maximum authorization level Select the Maximum authorization level from the dropdown list. Normally you would select ‘Master’.
However, you might want to give a third party a Master password with a View authorization level so that
they have View only access.
Origin date & time The Origin date & time field defaults to the time when you are adding the vessel. If you require historical
data for the vessel in this login (e.g. position reports and messages), you can select an historical date and
time using the options provided in the shaded prompt box.
Add date & time Select an Add date & time from the shaded prompt box. This is the time you want the vessel to appear in
the login.
Remove date & time Select the Remove date & time from the shaded prompt box if you wish the vessel to be removed from
the username at a specified date and time.
3. Click on ADD.
3 Tasks 91

Why do some pages still look like the original MAT? 4.1
At Pole Star, ensuring customer satisfaction through innovation, system availability, performance and reliability
is our top priority. For this reason, some areas of the application will continue to use the original Purplefinder look
and feel.
This applies to some infrequently used/complex features (e.g. Voyage Monitoring), for which the development
investment required to upgrade the feature would have outweighed the benefits to you - our customer.
We have identified the affected pages in the MAT 2.0 Upgrade Guide. We appreciate your understanding and apo-
logise for any inconvenience this may cause.

When the vessel is alongside in port, there is an increased probability of communication problems
because there is likely to be a high concentration of interference sources. High power VHF, UHF
and microwave equipment can all cause interference problems. Buildings, gantries and other large
structures can also cause problems in port by blocking the line of sight to the satellite. When the
vessel leaves port, tracking and reporting should resume within 24 hours.
