How does MAT work?

Marine Asset Tracker 2.0 is powered by Pole Star's reliable and powerful asset tracking platform, Purplefinder.
By going on to the Purplefinder website (www.purplefinder.com) and logging in with your username and pass-
word, you and other designated users can access data relating to your fleet via your desktop, laptop, tablet or
smartphone. All you need is access to the web.

Important Note: Add our address to your safe sender list.

To avoid notifications and alerts from MAT being blocked or filtered by your email provider, please add
“@Purplefinder.com” and “@Purplefinder.net” to your safe senders list. If you need support or assistance,
please speak to your IT department.

Where can I get help if I need it?

This user guide should help you answer any common questions - however, if you have any other queries or prob-
lems, please contact Pole Star Customer Support or your Pole Star distributor (See "Get in touch" on page 108).

Fleet list 2.2
The fleet list gives you an overview of your fleet's situ-
ation at a glance. Your fleet's latest position report data is
displayed alongside a thumbnail map of each ship's loc-
ation.

Understanding the fleet list

The Fleet list provides you with a lot of information about your fleet at a glance.

Thumbnail Map

The thumbnail map shows the location of the vessel (at the time it sent its latest position report).

Position Report Data

The information on the position report comes from three different sources: the user, the satellite transceiver and
Purplefinder.

Ship search

The fleet list includes search functionality.

This powerful tool will search as you type, meaning that you start seeing results as soon as you start typing the
name of the ship.

Type the letter "a" in the search field. MAT 2.0 will automatically filter all vessels with the letter "a" any-
where in its name.

Position reports 2.3

Once installed and fully operational, MAT will report using the following report types:

Report Types What it means

A message sent by the transceiver aboard the vessel, containing its latest position (lat/long) plus additional
Standard position report
information such as the date & time.

A message sent by certain transceiver types (MAT1, MAT3 and MAT5), containing a warning if there is a
Warning position report
power or mechanical problem with the unit. See " Warning position reports" on page 21.

A monthly message sent by certain transceiver types (e.g. MAT5), containing information about the status
Battery report
of the transceiver and its battery. See "Battery reports" on page 22.

Standard position reports

MAT transceivers are programmed to transmit regular

standard position reports. Each standard position report
contains the vessel's latest position, as well as additional
data such as the date & time.

You can view a position report in three ways:

l On the fleet list (see "Fleet list" on page 18).

Warning position reports

MAT1, MAT3 and MAT5 will automatically transmit a warning position report if there is a power or mechanical
problem with the unit.

You can view warning position reports in two ways:

l Set up warning position report notifications to receive the battery report automatically in your inbox. (See
"Add notifications" on page 46).

l In the Position Report History report. (See "Position report history" on page 58).

The messages vary depending upon whether it is a MAT1, MAT3 and MAT5 transceiver, as shown in the fol-
lowing tables:

MAT1 warnings
Warning message Description What it means

Voltage: xx volts Critical voltage has fallen below 9V. Check power supply

For MAT1, the voltage line in the APR will usually read “At least voltage: 10.8”. If the critical voltage falls
below 9V, the next position report transmitted will be a WPR and the voltage line will give the current
voltage reading. When the critical voltage reaches its usual level, the next position report will be an APR
with the voltage line “At least voltage: 10.8”.

MAT3 warnings
Warning message Description What it means

Voltage: < 13 V Critical voltage has fallen below pre-set critical level. Replace power pack

The voltage line in the APR will usually read “14 V” for MAT3. If the critical voltage falls below 13 V, the
next position report transmitted will be a WPR and the voltage line will read “< 13 V”. The voltage will now
reduce rapidly. You are advised to replace the power pack immediately.

cast data is updated every 6 hours. Tidetech gathers its weather data from multiple sources.

Find out more about Tidetech on its website: www.tidetech.org.

2 About 31
Asset groups

If you have a large fleet, you may find it useful to organise

your fleet into groups. Asset groups allows you to
organise your vessels into your own custom groupings.

You can:

l Add group (see page 67)

l Edit group (see page 68)

l Delete group (see page 69)

Example: Try grouping vessels by type, operator, area or charterer.

Overdue position reports

Usually a missed position report is nothing to worry about.

However, sometimes it can indicate that there is a prob-
lem with the hardware or the power supply aboard the ves-
sel. For this reason, you may want to know if a vessel
fails to send a scheduled position report.

That is why MAT includes an Overdue Position Report

feature that notifies you automatically in the event that a
vessel fails to send a position report.

You can:

l Add overdue position report notifications (see page 53)

l Copy overdue position report notifications (see page 53)

l Delete overdue position report notifications (see page 54)

2 About 32
Points of interest

You can use this feature to display points of interest on

the fleet map. This could be, for example, a particular
port, shipping agent or offshore oil terminal.

You can:

l View a point of interest (see page 79)

l Add a point of interest (see page 78)

l Edit a point of interest (see page 79)

l Delete a point of interest (see page 80)

Amver notifications

Amver (Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue) is a voluntary global ship reporting system used world-
wide by search and rescue authorities to arrange for assistance from participating merchant vessels to persons
in distress at sea. The Amver notifications tool enables you to automatically forward position reports from a ves-
sel or vessels in your fleet to Amver at no extra cost. By using this automated system, you remove the need for
the ship to manually send sailing plans and position reports to Amver, thus saving time and money on com-
munications. For more information on Amver, go to www.amver.com.

Reports 2.6
Position report history

This feature provides immediate access to all historical

position reports received for an individual vessel. It gives
you the option to view the report on the screen or down-
load to an Excel spreadsheet.

Credit statement

Whether you have a vessel account or a fleet account, you will be notified when you are approaching your critical
credit quantity (100 credits per vessel) and need to order more credits . However, you are advised to monitor
usage of credits across the fleet and be aware when the number remaining is running low in your account(s).

The credit statement gives a summary of the credit quantity remaining for the individual vessel or the entire fleet,
depending upon which type of account you have set up, as shown below.

Itemised credit usage

This report shows how the credits were used by each vessel for the period specified.

Credit usage summary

This report shows the total number of credits used by each vessel for a specific period.

Tip: To monitor your credit usage, you may wish to analyse the data by incorporating custom fields into the
report. (See "Manage custom fields" on page 99).

Custom fields

To monitor your credit usage more closely, you can create custom fields so that you can analyze usage by, for
example, Office, Owner, Cost Centre or Purchase Order Number. Once created, your custom fields will appear
as additional columns in the Credit usage summary (See "Manage custom fields" on page 99), which you can
then download to Excel for further analysis.

3 Tasks 51
Test notifications

This test ensures that the communication channels –

email and SMS – are working, and that reports are reach-
ing designated recipients. It ensures the information is
reaching its destination by sending a copy of the last
report to the selected Resource address.

This is particularly important for email which might come

up against firewalls or spam filters.

It is also important for mobile telephone numbers that have been transferred between operators, as they may not
be deliverable without intervention from your SMS service provider. Messages are routed according to the coun-
try code and the network prefix. For example, country code 44 and network prefix 7986 will be routed to the Virgin
network in the UK. If this number is transferred to another UK network operator such as Vodafone then problems
in SMS transmission may occur.

To carry out the test:

1. Click on the TEST box to the right of the resource address you wish to test.

2. You will normally receive an email/SMS within one minute. No acknowledgement of the test will appear
on the screen.

Note: Test SMS messages will incur a charge of 3 credits.

Manage users

You can create up to 10 additional standard logins and associate vessels or groups of vessels to them directly in
your Master login. This is useful if you have a large fleet and want colleagues to have access to the specific
groups of vessels for which they are responsible. It is also useful if there is a third party to whom you wish to
have limited access.

For each standard login, you can include all three authorization levels according to the level of password you
want to give each user: Master, Assistant, View (See "Password comparison matrix" on page 16).

Add a new login

1. Go to Setup > Login > Create login.

2. Enter the new Username.

3. Enter a Master password for your new username.

You may want to make a note of the password you enter as it will not appear at any further stage.

1. Re-enter the Master password.

2. Click on CREATE.

Please note: If you require different levels of access for this username, you can create Assistant and View
passwords for it. However, to do this you will have to leave the login you are currently in, so you are
advised to add vessels to this login first. (See "Add a new login" on page 90).

they have View only access.

data for the vessel in this login (e.g. position reports and messages), you can select an historical date and
time using the options provided in the shaded prompt box.

Add date & time Select an Add date & time from the shaded prompt box. This is the time you want the vessel to appear in
the login.

Why do some pages still look like the original MAT? 4.1
At Pole Star, ensuring customer satisfaction through innovation, system availability, performance and reliability
is our top priority. For this reason, some areas of the application will continue to use the original Purplefinder look
and feel.

This applies to some infrequently used/complex features (e.g. Voyage Monitoring), for which the development
investment required to upgrade the feature would have outweighed the benefits to you - our customer.

We have identified the affected pages in the MAT 2.0 Upgrade Guide. We appreciate your understanding and apo-
logise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Why don't I see a ship on the thumbnail map? 4.2

The ship may not have started reporting yet. Once the transceiver has been installed on the ship, connected to
power and in line of sight of a satellite, it will send its first position report. The data will be displayed on the fleet
list page and an icon will appear on the map indicating the vessel’s position. If no position report has been sent,
only the vessel name and the Origin date & time will be displayed with a world map (but no icon).

What do I do if a ship is not reporting? 4.3

If the unit is not reporting, read the Troubleshooting section of this guide for possible reasons and help to get the
unit reporting again. (See "Troubleshooting" on page 102).

Troubleshoot a MAT-IDP690 5.1

The checks in this section may help you to resolve the problem with your MAT-IDP690 yourself:

MAT-IDP690 is not reporting

1. Is the vessel in port?

l No: Proceed to step 2.

l Yes:

When the vessel is alongside in port, there is an increased probability of communication problems
because there is likely to be a high concentration of interference sources. High power VHF, UHF
and microwave equipment can all cause interference problems. Buildings, gantries and other large
structures can also cause problems in port by blocking the line of sight to the satellite. When the
vessel leaves port, tracking and reporting should resume within 24 hours.

2. Does MAT-IDP690 have a clear view of the sky?

l Yes:  Proceed to step 3.

l No:

The transceiver requires a clear and unob-

structed view of the sky in order to com-
municate with the SkyWave and GPS
satellite constellations, so obstructions
within the look angle range should be min-
imised.

The transceiver must be a minimum of 2

metres from any other communication sys-
tems and must NOT be in the line of sight of radar scanners.

3. Is MAT-IDP690 connected to a 12 or 24 V dc power supply?

l Yes:  Proceed to step 4.

l No:

5 Troubleshooting 102

because there is likely to be a high concentration of interference sources. High power VHF, UHF and
microwave equipment can all cause interference problems. Buildings, gantries and other large structures
can also cause problems in port by blocking the line of sight to the satellite. When the vessel leaves port,
tracking and reporting should resume within 24 hours.

3. Does the MAT-GS have a clear view of the sky?

l Yes:  Proceed to step 3.
