Relevance of Safety and Protection Laws Particularly in the Engineering Profession

Every profession can encounter potential hazards in the workplace. The engineering

profession, in particular, faces numerous hazards and risks on the job. They mostly work in the

field in various settings. To avoid serious injuries and discrimination, it is critical to be aware of

safety and protection laws. This significant legislation will also aid in reducing the country’s

rising cases of workplace injuries and illnesses. (Tanggol, 2018). Republic Act No. 11058 and

.Department Order No. 198 are among these laws

Republic Act No. 11058 is an act issued by Department Order No. 198 that strengthens

compliance with occupational safety and health standards and provides sanctions for violations.

(Villarica & Alvarez, 2017). Chapter I, Section 1 of R.A. no. 11058 states that a safe and healthy

workforce is an integral aspect of nation building. Engineers are the backbone of nation-

building and play a vital role in making a nation habitable for its inhabitants (“Role of Engineers

in Nation Building,” 2016). Republic Act No. 11058 makes it important for us to understand our

responsibilities and rights as employers and employees. Sections 5, 6, 7, and 8 of Chapter III

detail the workers' rights that we should be aware of. It states that workers have the right to be

informed about all forms of hazards in the workplace, that workers have the right to accept or

decline unsafe tasks, that workers have the right to report accidents, and that workers have the

right to personal protective equipment, which the employer must provide free of charge. These

laws are especially important in the engineering profession because engineers work with a
2

variety of people and must be aware of their own rights as well as the rights of their coworkers.

.These laws also assist us in being prudent so that no one can take advantage of us

Laws governing safety and precaution are especially important in the engineering field

or profession. These laws prohibit workplace discrimination, govern insurance benefits, and

protect workers' rights. (Jonesboro, 2017). With these, everyone in the workforce can work

without having to worry about their safety. To elaborate, one of the primary goals of

.engineering is safety. A safe work environment keeps employees productively alert
