G8 Q4 W2 Comparing Mitosis and Meiosis
G8 Q4 W2 Comparing Mitosis and Meiosis
BIG IDEA: Cells divide for growth, repair, and reproduction. There are two types of nuclear division: mitosis
and meiosis. Mitosis consists of a single division, at the end of which two daughter cells are formed.
Mitosis maintains the chromosome number from the parent cell to the daughter cells. Meiosis consists of
two successive cell divisions at the end of which four daughter cells are formed. Meiosis reduces the
chromosome number of the daughter cells to half that of the parent cell.
Directions: Based on pictures below of mitosis and meiosis. Fill in the blanks, using the choices in the box,
write a word or words to complete the statement below.
Diploid cells
1. The full set of chromosomes _______________________
Daughter nuclei
2. Cells that are offspring of parent cell _________________
Sister Chromatids
3. Coiled replicated DNA that forms two strands joined as an x shape ______________________
4. Exactly alike ______________________
Mitosis
5. A cell that divides to make two daughter cells______________
Direction: Fill in d or to the characteristics the blanks using the word of mitosis and meiosis.
